I've never owned one of these things.

Are they primarily meant for first person shooter and sports oriented games?

I bought mine (PS3) specifically for use as a Blu-ray player.

It is what it is.

There are lots of types of games available. Cuphead, Microsoft Flight Simulator 2020 is headed for the Xbox, Minecraft, Skyrim.

Yeah, I've heard that quite a few people do that. The upper tier model of the recently released PS5 does that as well. However, you can get a stand alone Blu-Ray player for less than $500 if that's all you want the device for.

I'm more into strategy type games etc.

A flight simulator might be fun, however, I want to avoid M$ products too.

The PS3 was the best Blu-Ray and upscaling DVD player available at the time. It had better video quality than the high end Blu-Ray players.

The higher end PS5 is rumored to have very high quality 4k Blu-Ray capabilities as well.

Strategy as in 'hard core, tabletop gaming' strategy where your panzer division is going to get crushed under some T-42s?

Strategy as in turn-based RPG(-ish) games - Mario vs Rabbids, Fire Emblem?

Other... like, othello?
