Silicon Mac Mini Question
Posted by: Ammo
Date: November 16, 2020 02:41PM
My 2013 27” iMac is very slow and seems to be near the end of its life. I don’t think it be able to run Big Sur. But I got to thinking - rather than purchase a silicon iMac, might I be able to use the new Mini to drive my current monitor? I need a large screen monitor.

This doesn't specifically address the silicon macs, but iMacs in general as a monitor...

You're right, it won't be able to run Big Sur. (As an aside, my 2012 iMac 27" got amazingly fast when I replaced its original Fusion drive with pure SSD storage.)

Sure, as long as your monitor supports these connection types!:

Whats your "current monitor"?

new minis can drive dual 4K monitors, or even 1 6K with ease.

If you arent really interested in Big Sur id say you iMac still has plenty of life. Drop a SSD/NVMe off the back as a boot drive and up the ram to 32 GB. Wont cost much and would give it a HUGE kick.
