The FOMO is strong with these new Apple Silicon Macs

I personally have absolutely no reason to buy one.

And it is true my lovely SO has a greatly underpowered Mac. But she's not banging the door for a new machine.

But the FOMO keeps saying - wouldn't she BENEFIT from one?!

yeah... wife has been complaining about her 2009 iMac... maybe time to bite the bullet.

basic mini + my 27" screen (then get a new 4K screen for me =)

$700 just doesn't buy that much used iMac... like 2013. and 21.5" have a huge gap between 2014 and 2018.

Wow, it't like this topic was meant just for me. My wife's 2009 13" MBP is getting rather long in the tooth and the new MBA is calling out with it's siren song to buy one.

I am trying to patiently wait until Apple makes Friends and Family discounts for employees available on the M1 MBAs...I'm not sure I can hold out.

I am about to take in some cash on a website build project and it will be tough to just bank that money...

I will likely buy a 2nd gen mini if it has 32 GB of RAM and HDMI 2.1. The Core Solo Intel mini was borderline POC.

I bought one just under three years ago and I still want a new M1.

Having a relatively recent Mac will make it easier to wait to see what the release of the next line of ASi Macs brings, though.

I guess that working with Macs in IT, I'll eventually see one so my FOMO is somewhat muted.

Put another way: 5 (yes five) very specific Macs that were on my Most Wanted list when they came out are now mine thanks to Apple Refurbs and other people wanting to upgrade, 4 for free and the Apple Refurb paid of course:

2009 13" or 15" MBPro (I have one of each now!)
2011 15" MBPro HiRez screen (but it died 2 weeks ago, sigh)
2012 2.6 Quad Mini (bought refurb in 2014)
2013 or '14 15" MBPro retina (a 2014 with a very mild screen defect)

I can wait.

BTW I'm waiting for the last of my Most Wanted: 2013- '15 13" MBPro retina. One day it will be mine!

I normally want to resist change and stick with what I have. However, lately, I don't know if it's the pandemic or what, but I have an urge to buy Mac stuff I don't really need just to tinker with. The M1 Macs are right up that alley.

I don't get the FOMO. If you don't buy one now, you can buy one later. You can buy a second generation model. It isn't like Apple is going to stop making Macs. Maybe years down the line but not for a long time yet. smiling smiley

I'm exactly the same. I don't think the recent urge is COVID-related - I think it has more to do that, for the first time since 2006, interesting things are afoot in the world of Mac hardware.

maybe FOMO isnt the right acronym...?

But the desire to buy new iron, that isn't the "same ol thing" (even tho it is) is drawing me in.

2018 mini is great -- but lackluster. i3 chip and suck graphics. Been that way for years... in a rut.

but the M1... no crappy i3, and a realish GPU

$700 is still daunting. Would have been better at $599. or even $499...

I know this is just a benchmark... but this is the wow -- and why waiting for M2 isn't even necessary

I've been thinking of the MBA for a completely different reason. It's getting to be time to replace the iPad 2 that tops out at iOS 9, and I had been thinking of an iPad with an Apple keyboard. That starts to get a bit pricey, and an M1 MBA should be able to run the iPad apps instead.

This would also let me evaluate Big Sur and Arm based Mac apps for future transition.

But I'm in no rush, maybe wait for the next generation or for these to show up in the refurb store.

The specs look amazing if you were in the market for a lower end laptop. If you're interested in higher end then you're hoping this strategy scales. No reason why it shouldn't but Apple still has to bring it to market.

Users already have dual 1080p/1440p 19:10 desktop monitors. There is a chance the right dock (or a dongle) would allow dual monitors but that adds to the cost.

More than 16GB RAM, more than 2 USB/TB ports, support for multiple displays, better GPU or support for ATI/Nvidia graphics, support for external GPUs.

AA, he's an IT guy for a big company. They have people receiving M1 MBA's & MBP's that want dual display support. He's not going to replace all their monitors with a single widescreen monitor.

Simultaneously supports full native resolution on the built-in display at millions of colors and:
One external display with up to 6K resolution at 60Hz

He did try docks and dongles, no dice.

You are not in the M1 customer segment from these specs! Get an Intel Mac and enjoy, the 16" laptop does all of these things, and well.

I get the issue with the lack of dual monitor support.

With everything I've read, 16GB RAM may be more than enough for 99.9% of users. The M1 appears to use RAM much more efficiently/effectively than legacy systems. We very well may need to change how we perceive RAM needs.

Beyond that, Apple's suggestion is to run one monitor off the Thunderbolt port and the other off the HDMI port—no docks or dongles required.
