The author has compiled some very enthusiastic takes from unexpected sources on Apple's new desktop processor:

Tis comment tho -- Wha, huh? LOL -- "just bought"

Sucks cause i just bought a MacBook 3 years ago. And that battery is super super appealing.

I would suggest not reading the OP’s link unless you have some room on your credit card.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Safe, the charge is already on the credit card...

True story - my wife has been using her new M1 MBA since Sat. I opened it up and saw battery was at 20%, so I plugged it in.

A few hours later, my son asked me whether I was charging the MBA - it was plugged in but not charging.

Turns out, my wife has used it pretty heavily Sun-Tues, and it was STILL at 20% battery.

Her MacBook really only gets her 3-4 hours on a charge.

If you had asked me 2 months ago when I planned on getting rid of my cMP 5,1, I would have muttered something about prying it from my cold, dead hands. Now? I'm anxiously waiting for the next gen chip to be released, and am seriously contemplating going to a Mac mini. My wife's 2010 iMac is starting to show signs of age and she asked me when the new iMacs are coming out. I told her she would probably be fine with one of the new M1 mini's with an external monitor, but I think she wants an iMac. She doesn't do anything major on it... web surfing and email mostly. But if she wants an iMac, that's what she'll get.

Watch this video and see if the new M1 is enough laptop for you.

Then watch this to see the impact of 8 vs 16 Gig of RAM.

Interesting video, showing you can do a lot with 8GB onboard fast RAM. But those MBPs were not attached to external monitors, and the RAM is shared with any video. Would love to have seen the same tests running an external 4k (or 5k!) monitor.

But IIRC, he compared results to previous generation MacBook Pros, which presumably weren't running external monitors.

Great links, thanks for sharing. It is obvious that any M1 system right now is much faster than what I am running for work (2015 MBP), so I would be happy to replace with it with even the MBA. However I do utilize an external monitor, only 20", along with the 15" MBP screen, so I think I would want to have either a mini with dual screens, or wait for a 16" MBP.

Still have not seen any tests for After Effects or with 3D apps like Maya, would be nice to see that compared to the MacPro, although honestly when you compare the performance per dollar it probably won't even matter.

Id just get you both a new mini. =)

Seriously - have you been looking at the tests and videos? Not sure what peeps are expecting from the next chip.. but Im guessing its not gonna be the same kinda jump these are making over current intel.

Unless your cMP has 128 GB RAM, Radeon 5XXX card, NVMe on a PCIe, or some 30 TB internal RAID... there's no way its gonna beat a new M1 mini.

Pair it with a nice Dell S series monitor -- silver bases and backs, really nice looking.
32" 4K (curved or not) for you, and either a 24" or 27" for her. Budget friendly.

Or here's a deal -- 27" ultra sharp @350 + $150 promo card = free second monitor
[deals.dell.com]

The biggest down side is having to move to Big Sur -- all of your old apps wont work.

Really don't wait.

I have had nearly half my clients start to make the jump. Later this month Im gonna be swamped with setups.

Ummm.... Rosetta 2, anyone?

I'm torn. I REALLY want to get an M1 Mac mini now, but:

1) I'm curious and excited to see what the next ASi offerings will look like.
2) I dropped $2600 on an iMac just three years ago and am not looking to take a big loss if I were to sell it to buy an M1 Mac.
3) Truth be told, I would prefer a Space Gray mini to a Silver one.

It is what it is.

Probably never a better time to sell that iMac - amidst COVID and there is still a delay getting all of the M1 implications out the door. As soon as there's an M-series iMac, I bet the value will be half what you can get Nov 2020.

If aesthetics is really that much of an issue, buy a sticker or three.

Apologies, I should have been more specific -- all of your 32 bit apps wont run. =)

Since they are still on cMP and 2010 iMac -- cant be running any all 64 bit OS -- so prob using 32 bit apps -- will have to transition to 64 bit.

And Im also in the same boat.

My 2014 27" 5k iMac is maxed with 32 GB of ram -- and I always feel like I need more -- and its been feeling sluggish for a least a year. Even moved to a NVMe external (limited to 5 GB/s tho)

Only options are to break it open and move the NVMe inside... which might help... but still stuck with 32 GB ram.

So the idea of waiting for a new souped up iMac seems smart...

But I also know now has never been a better time to sell my iMac for the WFH crowd.

Getting a decent m1 mini @ say $1000-1200, even with half the ram would kick my iMacs ass. And 6-8 months from now when whatever new mini/imac/whatever comes out that I *really* want-- the m1 mini I buy today will *still* have excellent resale value. maybe lose $100?

Of course, I still need to factor in a screen.. at least 27" 4K.... but if it can be moved to my new setup.. meh.

I get it, if I just (LOL that "just" = 3 years =) dropped $2600 on an iMac... way less inclined. I dropped $1400 on mine, 5 years ago.

I will note that the new M1 Macs can run iPad apps. So you might be losing access to 32bit older Mac programs but gaining access to an array of iPad apps.

In my wife's use case, she has a favorite game that has iPad and Intel Mac versions. The Mac version does not run under Rosetta2 (the first such Intel app we've found). But the iPad version runs fine on her MBA - the main issue is the screen size is restricted to the iPad screen size she downloaded the iOS app onto.

I have to admit, the 5k screens on modern Intel iMacs are pretty sweet... So going to 4k is a definite downgrade.

that is my biggest fear -- Id love a 32" 5K (6K?) M2 iMac with 64 GB ram... but thinking its a long way off.

So temp replace it with a 32" 4K.

Hes got a M1 mini/16 GB vs i7 64 GB mini video -- even had to throw a $700 eGPU setup on it to make it close -- but *only* in GPU tests.

Really thinking hard now about dumping my iMac for a $1200 16 GB/1TB m1 mini -- so much more appealing than the 2020 iMac I want, with 8GB/1 TB @ $3000. Both would need extra $$ thown at them.. mini needs a monitor, iMac needs ram.

agggggggh.
