Recently I ordered a 1500A jump starter from AMZ, a bigger brother of an 800A from the same company, as the latter was discontinued.

Out of the box it showed three out of four bars of charge, indicating a charge somewhere between 75% and X%.

As some point above X, the fourth bar should illuminate, indicating 100% charge.

However, that doesn't happen.

After several days of continuous and intermittent charging, it never goes beyond three bars.

The indicator is a sort of a sequential tail light blinker thing.

While there was a slight increase in time between the illumination cycles the longer it charged, it never showed more than three bars.

Short of not trying to start a car, all the other functions work.

I don't know of any trick or step I might have missed in charging — the instructions said plug it into USB charge, plug charger into wall.

Even my MB 30W charger didn't do any better, and never got even warm to the touch.

So unless someone know some hint or trick, it's going back to AMZ.

Unfortunately, someone may get this as a Warehouse 'deal'.

Any ideas on charging it to 100?

If the owners guide says it should go to full bars and it doesn’t, then I think you have your answer. Sounds like you’ve done all that’s reasonable.

Did you read any of the Questions that might have been asked on the product page or see if any of the reviewers mentioned something similar? Can you contact the manufacturer?
It could be a bad fourth LED or maybe it is defective.

Did you read any of the Questions that might have been asked on the product page or see if any of the reviewers mentioned something similar?


I did not, and now I'm curious.

If it's just a bad LED, it's going back.

And returning in to AMZ is probably more practical than contacting the manufacturer.

However if it were out of the AMZ (now extended) return period, then they'd hear from me.

Not with only three LED's, he can't.

Apple chargers are horrible to use for testing things like this. They have smart circuitry built into them and they don't produce a constant output. What you need is the biggest charger you can find that is "always on" to try and give it a little kick.

Throwback Thursday Signature:

While your product may be defective, a couple of things you said caught my attention.

1) I have a similar sized power bank (not a jumpstarter). Getting it to fill that last bar can seeming take forever. Sometimes I just give up.

2) For these types of batteries, the battery management system will taper of the charge as it gets more full. By the time you get to 95% full, that last part might be trickling in at 5% of the rate earlier on. You're seeing that in the longer charging times for each successive bar. That also ties in with your Apple charger not warming up much. It will get very warm when the battery is empty, but get cooler as the rate of charging is tapered. It's possible that your getting to 98% and that last light need 100% to kick on. On my power bank, I just stopped worrying about that last light.

Using my Bolt EV as an example....I pulled in to a fast charger yesterday at 25% and it took 45 minutes to get to 80%. If I had wanted to get it to 100%, I would have needed to wait there for probably another hour. Once I am at 80%, it makes more sense to just come home and finish the charge on the 110v charger overnight.

My first charger and the MB charger weren't up to the task.

The former was too low in capacity, and the latter just didn't recognize the jumpstarter.

I third iQ charger did the trick.

Try running the the jump starter to empty and then charge it up. It might need to be recalibrated.
