We watched it last night. Up there with the great films and I had to do some researching as to how they created the seamless editing. I might say too that it's because of the digital age! I don't know if the same could be done if it had been shot on film-it would have to have been done as one continuous shot (as some movies shot on film were).
The production was a real pain. Building all those trenches, e.g.?
Concern was raised about filming on Salisbury Plain by conservationists who felt the production could disturb potentially undiscovered remains, requesting a survey before any set construction began.
And some more production issues:
Sections of the film were also shot near Low Force, on the River Tees, Teesdale in June 2019. The production staff had to install signs warning walkers in the area not to be alarmed at the artificial bodies and body parts strewn around the site.
I like this note about the editing:
Smith would only look like he did a good job if no one could tell he did his job at all.
I didn't see anything about the plane crash scene, tho. Real? CGI?
Anyway, well worth watching.
Edit: There's something screwy to the Wikipedia link I keep trying to post. So just go to 1917 (2019) on Wiki...
