What are things you thought were real but weren't?

In the movie Home Alone, I thought the movie the main character watches was an actual old school black and white film. I didn't realize it until I did an IMDB search decades after I saw it.

Honest politicians

Honest politicians

Power corrupts. The level to which power corrupts politicians depends on their susceptibility to it. I once had the honor to meet a young woman who was a generally honest politician in a deeply corrupt country. She tried to remove the controls that the military had on her people. Ultimately they murdered her for it.

Checks and balances.

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan
