I'm looking for a reach-around.

Okay, now that I have Newt's attention (and maybe others), let me clarify. I'm going to try to change a hose in our washing machine next weekend and one of the damn spring clamps is pretty much inaccessible. The part that I have to get the pliers on is 180 degrees opposite of where I need to reach. The whole process is explained very well here but that clamp he's referring to at about 2:17 is not facing out like that on my machine. Rather it's turned around, so it's going to be a pita to access.

What would be idea is to have bionic fingers, but absent that, I need some kind of pliers with the handles in front but the clamping part sort of reversed. Is something like these hose clamp pliers going to be my best option or is there something else I'm not thinking of? It will stink to spend $40 on some tool I'll likely never use again.

I can see three possibilities:

1. If you're replacing that rubber part why don't you just cut it off so that you can get access to the clamp on the back side?

2. Another option is to use a dremel and cut the clamp off. You can replace the destroyed clamp with a regular hose clamp.

3. Also, that type of clamp can often be rotated around the hose if you can reach around with your fingers and push on one of the tabs, which may loosen it enough that the tabs can be rotated around to the front for easier access.

4. Just thought of another possibility. Can you remove the back of the washer to access it that way, or can you tip it onto it's back and remove the bottom of the washer?

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Thanks, davester. Interesting, those are three options I've thought of, only I was going to go in reverse order. There's a good chance that rubber part isn't the source of the leak and if I don't have to destroy it I'd rather not.

I'm just glad there's someone else out there who's washer / dryer install is a pita.

absolutely cut that thing off and replace with a regular screw hose clamp. A dremel or even a pair of wire cutters will do the job.

yuck. What a pain in the tush.

Yeah, the more I think about it, that seems to be the best solution. Hell, even if I end up also cutting the hose itself, I bought a new one to replace it anyway.

Indeed. If this fix doesn't solve the problem, we're probably looking at a replacement. And based on space requirements, we have ONE option. Talk about having you by the short and curlies. Jeesh.

My dryer vents downward due to space constraints. There's a hole in the floor through which two bits of ducting meet. When we redo that bathroom I will attempt to find a different solution even if it means redoing some drywall.

That movie was exactly where my mind went when I saw the subject.
