Venmo users, I need input

I got an email from venmo that somebody sent me 20.00. She then emailed me she had sent it to the wrong person, and wanted me to send it back. I'm worried I'll send it, then she'll cancel the payment to me, or something weird like that. It just doesn't seem right, although the deposit does seem to show in my Venmo. I never actually finished setting up my Venmo account, so I don't really know the ins and outs, etc., or how it all looks/works. It looks like there are scams, although I can't find anything that looks exactly like this.
Actually, this morning, she's sent two "requests for refund". I'm holding off, just because it seems too stupid to be true.

If it is in your venmo account and you did not put it there, return it. Then close your venmo account to protect yourself. You apparently set up your venmo account enough so it is functional. You had better finish what you started or cancel it completely.

It is not much of a scam if only $20 is involved.

You can only cancel a Venmo payment if sent to someone without an account. Since she sent it to you, and you have an account, she cannot cancel it.

I would probably return the money.

Yeah, I've never used it. I started setting it up to pay my haircutter, but I never added a credit card. In apple pay, I get the text with payment and have to add it to my wallet. I guess venmo is more like paypal? I guess I'll just send it back, and get rid of venmo completely.

Frick, apparently I can't pay from the balance, and have to add my bank or credit card? I'll have to look at it again when I'm not working. Thanks.

This article says it could be a scam though the amount is so low. maybe it’s legit. maybe they’re testing your guilibility.

The article also says the sender can cancel a transaction. might check venmo’sTOS.

Venmo Scam?

You're awesome graylocks! That definitely didn't seem right, and if it happens to be legit, it's only 20.00 which I'm sure they'll get over. I just need to figure out how to get rid of what I started on Venmo. Applepay and Paypal are enough ways to pay. Thanks!

I'm starting to use Venmo, and I find it covers transactions with friends etc that are not covered by Applepay or Paypal.

I have only once used it for a stranger. But it saved on credit card fees (which are charged to Applepay or Paypal).

$20 is actually pretty normal Venmo-type and size transaction in my circle. Many are even less...

It definitely seems to be the most popular one, but I don't need it. Paypal has the gift option for friends, and I've actually helped several people set up applepay so I could pay them for things, so that's worked out. And that's no charge if there is no credit card involved. I just pay my haircutter extra to cover the 3% for credit card.

$20 doesn't seem very much for the trouble of scamming, but maybe there is more to it, as greylocks suggested.

Send payment to her, selecting that the money come from your Venmo balance (the amount she sent). Should be okay.

All of those services have worked fine for me but I triple check and still fret over using the correct spelling of the user ID or email address because i'm so afraid of sending it to some random stranger and the hassle of getting it back.

I can't trust myself, so I either use the contacts, or copy and paste, if at all possible!

I'm going to wait and see what happens. She said in the first email that she was going to contact support, and it could be a scam. We'll see if the balance I currently show disappears.

Follow-up, if anyone sees this, but Venmo just automatically gave the money back to her, which is fine with me, but boy, it seems as though that process could really be abused.
