Who's a good off/online vendor for that tasty ambrosia called Bacon?

Yes, I love bacon. Royally. So does one of my Italian coworkers and he's rather upset that Italy does not have something similar to British or American style of bacon. The closest Italians have is pancetta or speck. So, to show my gratitude for taking me on Vespa rides and showing me around, I would like to send him some luscious bacony goodness in the mail.

Who are your favorite farms, purveyors, or vendors of this meaty ambrosia? I was thinking of ordering some off www.igourmet.com but I'm open to other suggestions. What's the normal going price for some nitrate-free bacon? It doesn't have to be organic and possibly not even nitrate-free but I'm sure he would appreciate the latter because he's not accustomed to preservatives like our American palates are. I'll consider all options.

Thanks y'all.

Prosciutto is very bacon-like, though usually sliced much, much thinner.

Trisho.

Mmmm... bacon!

Here's the local place that has decent bacon... even better summer sausage, and garlic jerkey. Smoked cheeses and trout also fantastic.

I would think that there is only a maximum tastiness that a pig's bacon can muster. I like Niman Ranch, which adorns my Club Sandwiches that I buy from the Berkeley Bowl. Their products are organically raised on open farms.

I would also try to find some WIld Boar Bacon in addition to the domesticated pig slices...
Tasty stuff.

I also got some Buffalo Bacon from www.buffalogal.com, but it appeared last time I checked that they no longer carry it. Not technically bacon, but simillar texture, and a very nice flavor.

Really a very nice gesture by the way.... but you're going to be frightened by the shipping costs of a frozen package to Italy...

Ah.. it appears they have the Peppered Buffalo Bacon..

Again, not really bacon, but uniquely american, and would be a tasty treat to toss in with the big package of honest-to-goodness BACON.

Damn.. this thread is making me hungry...

I'm so happy to see there are other lovers of bacon as much as my Italian cohort and me. When I first thought of it, I was thinking of a place somewhere in the UK (addressing Paul F's concern). I'll check out all of those places and see what I can find. Please keep the suggestions coming, especially any European places...

Thanks y'all.

Trish,

Have you been to a boar deli store in Italy? They always have a stuffed angry boar in the

window. Weird. I saw them in Siena. Any bacon there?

Get my good bacon at Costco now.

Yes, sadly, on review the smokehouse here doesn't ship internationally... and if it did it would be prohibitively expensive.

It's funny the things that just aren't found in some other cultures, yet we take them for granted here. In '88 I was doing a term abroad in France, and looking for Cream cheese to make a family recipe for my host family. There wasn't anything even close, despite France being well known for it's breadth of dairy products.

Of course when I got back to the states I went through Nutella withdrawal smiling smiley

Yep, I was in Siena on Saturday and there were stuffed boars in the windows everywhere. Weird...And it seems the no-bacon thing is just national. Their versions of ham are more prosciutto like.

Even the bacon in Mexico is different than what we have here in the US.

Wild boar? Peppered Buffalo? Baahhhhh.... too chi chi for me.

Just get some good ol' Oscar Mayer thick cut bacon and throw it onto a lava hot frying pan. Hmmm... i haven't made ghetto pasta carbonara in a while. I might have to make some tonight!

I think you'd be best off just shipping some from the grocery store. anything "nicer" seems to vary significantly from that idea of bacon.

maybe it would be possible to trick an italian butcher into giving you something like american bacon.

can't believe no one elses posted this... anyway, I like Niman Ranch and Beeler's from Iowa for my pork products. Beeler's is definitely more mass market and cheaper and just as good, IMO.

Thanks guys, I'll peruse these this weekend and will follow up. So far, the Nueske brand is looking good and wonder if he would be alright slicing his own stuff. I started the day off right this morning a few slices of bacon that I peppered and honeyed while they cooked in the pan. Heaven.

3d, Oscar Meyer bacon is waaay too salty for me. I think it gives me headaches too.
