Probiotic gummy bears; a couple once a day. Also fiber gummy bears or pills; doc always says, you can never have too much fiber. Both are CVS Branded.

And, yeah, they have helped.

I brew my own kombucha (after buying it for the better part of a year), and it's said to have probiotic properties. Not sure I could attribute any specific aspect of my healthiness to it, but I like to think that it is doing something good for my "gut health."

Tried them years ago and they did nothing for me.

At the suggestion of an MD friend, started taking to help me stabilize my GI track during travel. The multi-species version was recommended.

I ran an experiment where I ran out, purchased single species brand and noticed the difference, returned relatively quickly after getting my normal dosing. I take 1x now at home even with COVID, sometimes used to 2x during pre-COVID travel.

I find it also helps me a bit with weight stability.

I think there are 1000+ options. If you want my specific version, PM me. But I do not think what works for me will work for everyone.

Some variants are effectively daily vitamins, too - though that's less well described.

I sure wish we had good data from RCTs, those will come but will be awhile.

I tried a few and couldn't tell any difference at all. I tried Zenwise and AOR. When they run out I'm not going to buy anymore.

yep, likely outcome for many Probiotics. A lot appear to be scams - may as well be placebo pills.

Wish we had some regulation on these.

Tried them a few years ago. Shortly afterwards, I ended up in the emergency room with a severe case of diverticulitis, which resulted in having part of my colon removed. Coincidence? Probably. But I haven't gone back to taking them.

So sorry to hear this!

And yes, another reason to think that these should be regulated.

I've used them to help control my IBS, for which they've been great. The brand I'm using is Ganeden, which got bought out by Schiff, but is still very high quality.

And not to contradict Zoid, but ABSOLUTELY you can have too much fiber ... when I told him of my issues with fiber, my GI doc at one point laughingly said to me, "well, fiber isn't for everyone". I am able to have some fiber-containing stuff, but if I know I'm going to be eating any serious amount of it, I usually dose with an enzymatic supplement that makes it far more tolerable.

I buy probiotic laced yogurt from Costco, when it's on sale.

Otherwise, I buy the cheapest yogurt they have, when I'm in the mood for yogurt.

I could eat a tub of it.

Kefir

I second kefir. I had some issues causes by a medication I was taking awhile back. I started drinking a cup of low fat unsweetened kefir a day and problems were gone in a couple of weeks.

In late March, after massive antibiotics following my appendectomy killed my intestinal flora resulting in a case of C.Diff., I started taking probiotics based on the recommendation of forum folks (Thanks, mspace!).

It really helped. I intended to stop taking them, but a couple times when I stopped it seemed to feel like the C.Diff. might be returning. It very well could have been coincidence, but C.Diff. is not an experience I would like to repeat. Also, I have never been so regular and consistent in my entire life and I have to credit the probiotics for much of that.

The problem with probiotics is the serious stuff is pretty expensive. I'm not sure the cheap stuff does anything.

I don't believe in them except in special circumstances, like during/after antibiotics when you need the gut flora replenished fast (and that includes C Diff, although fecal transplant seems to be the best way to administer them then) . Sekker's travel experience is interesting, but I have no problems traveling and frequently eating street food with no probiotic help (this includes most Asian countries, but no Latin American experience, so YMMV). I have seen data that your intestinal flora pretty much returns to the same equilibrium once you remove external factors like antibiotics, so I personally do not think that long term use is valuable for the majority of people. I usually do not count fiber in probiotic, just living organisms (some manufacturers are calling it "prebiotic").

I was trying anything and everything until I figured out I was lactose intolerant.
