Woke up this morning and can't do anything Apple related. Can't use the store, messages, etc. I get a message saying "Apple ID locked. Your Apple ID has been locked for security reasons. To unlock it, you must verify your identity."

When I click on the "Unlock Account" button I am given 2 choices:

"Select how you want to unlock your account
- Reset by email. An email with reset instructions will be sent to your rescue email address.

- Answer security questions and change your password now


What's going on? Things were fine when I went to bed. I really don't want to change my Apple ID password unless absolutely necessary. Anyone shed any light on what's going on here?

I need to add. these are not emails. These are system messages when I try to access the Messages app, iCloud, etc.

I wonder if some knucklehead tried to login into their account and mistakenly used your id often enough to lock you out.

That happened to me a while ago. Twas indeed a bother.

I think I finally had to change my dam password, IIRC.

Happened to my wife too. Followed the email instructions to unlock it.

Curious if you have Apple's 2FA on?

I think they require 2FA nowadays, right?

No 2FA. I also didn't get an email, just the system message. I decided to go to my Manage Apple ID page on the Apple site. Tried to sign in and got the same message. It asked for answers to my security questions (not 2FA) and then gave me an Unlock button. Pressed it and all seems back to normal. Didn't have to change my password.

I have no idea what happened to get me here. I upgraded my phone to a new iPhone 12 Pro a few days ago, but sign in and activation went as normal and everything seemed to be doing fine.

Oh well, all's well that ends well I suppose. Have to re-sign in on all of my devices.

I would turn 2FA on now that you’ve regained access

Call Apple.

I go through the same process to unlock my AppleID through a web browser without changing the password or enrolling in 2FA.

My AppleID has been getting "Locked for security reasons" with increased frequency starting earlier this year. They never indicate why or give location info for where the failed attempts may have come from. I don't know if it's one of my devices causing it possibly due to some interruption in connectivity, or if it's some 400lb person on the other side of the world. I also think it's likely that there's a confused person that thinks my mac.com/me.com/icloud.com AppleID is really their name and keeps trying to login.

From the emails I get when I unlock the account, these are the dates this year that it has happened to me.

Before 2020, the last time it happened was in March 2017. It seems like something happened in 2020, for myself, and less frequently for others too,.

There is one thing that keeps coming up in the back of my mind. That iPhone battery class action claim form required that you provide the AppleID (username, NOT password) used on the phone in the claim. That was in mid July 2020. I'm wondering if there's some sort of automated claim verification process that might be triggering repeated failed logins. Or that the claim database was compromised. The AppleID that gets locked is the one provided in those claims, and my wife's AppleID was in a claim too. I have a few other AppleIDs that were not used in those claims and have not been locked this year.

I got locked out yesterday. I opted to answer my security questions, which I wasn’t sure I’d be able to do. Since then I have had to enter my ID password on every device, and I also get the silly message that my Apple Id is being used for FaceTime and Messages on a “new” device every time I have to re-enter the password on a different device, regardless of whether it’s a device I’ve had for years.

I have mac mini 10.15, MBA 11.0, MBP 10.15, iPhone 14.2 and iPad 12.4.9. I use the same iCloud Apple ID on all of them, I also use the same iTunes and App Store Apple ID for all of them. My iCloud Apple ID is different than my iTunes and App Store Apple ID.

I have had the same problem for some time now across all of the devices, numerous system requests for password for Apple ID, specifically the iTunes and App Store Apple ID.
