Sometimes when Firefox updates (and it will update itself automatically these days), it "decides" that your profile is too old and has too much cruft from all the different versions of Firefox you've run over the years and it will create a new profile for you that's missing everything you've grown to care about for the last couple of decades.
...It seems to be a deliberate attempt to drive people to use other browsers.
You may be able to enter
about:profiles in the Firefox address bar and select your old profile as the default.
If that's not working, then look in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. You should see two profiles there, the old and the new.
Quit Firefox, duplicate the old profile to your Desktop as a backup, then drag the contents of the old profile folder into the new profile folder, replacing the new contents.
