Big Sur hosed Firefox
Posted by: jonny

I just updated to Big Sur, and Firefox lost all of my add ons (1Password!) and bookmarks. It's like a clean install. When it launched, it mentioned something abut 'not sharing users?' but I didn't catch it all.
I have a full backup of my system, should I just pull off my old firefox and helper files?

Sometimes when Firefox updates (and it will update itself automatically these days), it "decides" that your profile is too old and has too much cruft from all the different versions of Firefox you've run over the years and it will create a new profile for you that's missing everything you've grown to care about for the last couple of decades.

...It seems to be a deliberate attempt to drive people to use other browsers.

You may be able to enter about:profiles in the Firefox address bar and select your old profile as the default.

If that's not working, then look in ~/Library/Application Support/Firefox/Profiles. You should see two profiles there, the old and the new.

Quit Firefox, duplicate the old profile to your Desktop as a backup, then drag the contents of the old profile folder into the new profile folder, replacing the new contents.

Excellent advice!
I think I figured it out. After the update, Firefox was running from the Application folder - in my old system, it was in a strange location for some reason. Firefox doesn't like that. I rebooted to my backup, synced, booted up Big Sur, synced, and all is well.
Unfortunately, my old subscription-free version of 1Password stopped working. Drat!

Thanks!
