any DJ software you would recommend?

I have been using MegaSeg for a couple of years and it's OK but does sometimes have butterflies. And I refuse to buy the newer version, as I might be getting a Core2 this coming year.

But, in the meantime, what do you use?

Define a bit further what you are trying to do. Are you a trying to Beat mix, do TurntabIism type stuff or just play good tunes seamlessly at Parties.

I am still traditional with two turntables, a mixer and VINYL, been doing beatmixing as a part time Club (and occasional Mobile DJ) for almost 25 years but last year I was about to make the jump to Final Scratch ...

but the software and I had some serious issues. I bought Final Scratch 1.5 and planned to run it on a 1.33mhz iBook G4 running Tiger. Only problem is Final Scratch 1.5 only works UP TO 10.3 and the iBook won't let me step backwards to 10.3 because it shipped with 10.4. I would have to buy Final Scratch 2 (no good upgrade pricing) so I decided to wait and go with Serato Scratch Live by Rane which is the premier DJ software in the US.

[serato.com]

Again if you are a Beatmixer or Club DJ, Serato is the Macintosh of Digital DJ software.

Final Scratch has become Traktor DJ Studio 3 and up-ed the system requirements again.

Some other PROFESSIONAL club DJ software for the Mac include Ableton Live, Torq by M-Audio, and a few others...

I'll wait until you answer the "Type of DJ" question before I go further....

Get yourself two turntables and a mic.

Been doing it for 13 years, on Mac for the past 7. I do 90% weddings, so I don't need to "scratch" or do custom mixes. The meet of my work is handcrafting a playlist and either being the life of the party or the fly on the wall depending on the crowd and how much motivation they need. iTunes has been great, but the new beta release of Volume Logic [www.volumelogic.com] is going to take care of a lot of my work for me. My last non-wedding event, bad camera with wrong date stamp:

fooled around with Ableton but that was 1.5yr ago. Never gave it a decent shot.

I see now that MegaSeg is binary, so no worries if I decide to stick with that and go Core2Duo book.

Mostly, I'm extremely picky about the parties I do. I'm a music snob of sorts and like to blend genres, so anyone who wants strictly Timberlake/Britney is out (for obvious reasons) and then the person who wants all Classic Rock is usually out, too. I prefer to blend Jazz, Soul, Rock, Lounge, African, etc. seamlessly. So, in other words, I don't do many gigs. About 10/year. But, I like to be "on" for the gigs and not worry about the machines. No scratching, just blends and traditional segues. Some mash-ups if I am feeling daring.

Thanks for the hints. I'll try volumelogic (edit: not for me, as I don't use iTunes to spin, but thanks regardless) and look at Serato.

In other areas, what do you folks use for equipment? both computer and traditional? I have an old Hafler amp, Behringer mixer, JBL MR series cabs and a generic (Stanton?) dual player, all alongside my iBook. No vinyl. Never got into buying loads of vinyl and not a club DJ, so can't justify the expense.

Although Serato and Final Scratch were first marketed at Scratch and Trick DJ's they became the industry standard for anyone wishing to blend and beatmix (and do Mashups) like traditional club DJ's. I am by no means a Scratch Dj or Turntablist, I grew up in the House and EARLY Techno music scene, learned on Vinyl and feel comfortable with Vinyl.

In computer terms it is like if I were a Artist who made drawings with Pen, Paint, and Ink, trying to learn how to draw using a Mouse. Serato or Final Scratch became a Wacom tablet for what I do. It takes what I am comfortable with and takes it to a digital level. it uses Time coded Vinyl Discs or CD's and syncs them to the Mp3, so I can do what I do JUST LIKE I was using vinyl. You don't need to use the time code CD's or Vinyl, it works well as a stand alone.

Early CD Players were a joke or so overpriced that they were not a option for me when I thought about it back in the day. Years ago, I used to be on lots of Record Label mailing lists and in a Record Pool so getting Vinyl wasn't a problem. I still can get Vinyl on almost anything I need. I m getting older so carrying TONS of Vinyl does become a chore at the end of a gig.

You may want to look at Traktor DJ Studio from what you described above. I played around with Version 2 and the thing that blew me away was the Auto Mix feature. If the two songs were near the same BPM range it would auto sync and mix it. the auto loop feature also allowed you to make your "own Break" in the track by looping it to give you a mixout break. It took about half of the skills I learned over the last 25 years and made it automated with a click of a mouse.

Ableton seems to be more geared to guys that produce and remix music in addition to playing it.

I spin at a small neighborhood bar at least 2 or 4 times per month and the booth has 2 Technics 1200's, Gemini 19" Rack mixer (1800 or similar I think), and Numark Dual CD player. The owner is hinting at upgrading to Pioneer CD-J's and a Serato based system.

My mobile system that I am slowly putting back together includes a pair of Yamaha 300 watt speakers (BR12's), a Numark Pro SM3 Mixer (optical fader is going using a cheap Numark DM 1002 Mixer as a Back-up), Peavey CS 800 amp, 2 cheap American DJ Tabletop CD players with Pitch control and of course a Pair of Technics 1200's.

I probably do less than 8 Mobiles per year (Bar life makes you lazy, moving equipment is "no fun").

The Mac side of me wants to invest in a MacBook NOW so I can move up to a Intel based Mac soon but the DJ side is saying go ahead and spring for the Serato AND MAKE SOME MORE MONEY DOWN THE LINE doing Mobiles to buy the MacBook (or MacBook Pro).

MacBook carrying 100gb of music to a gig, pumped through 16 channel Mackie board to a preamp rack, then onto the QSC and a Yamaha (3600 watts total), out to pair of Peavey 215's (dual 15's each, HO horn atop), single Peavey Low Rider 18" in JBL Cabaret Series cab. That's my small/normal setup. Add a Phonic amp, a pair of EV dual 15" subs and four Bose 802's for my full setup. Loud and clear!

Seems decent, although I am not a DJ by any means. Fun to play with though.
