Haven't seen this much excitement about new Mac hardware on the forum in many years...kind of exciting! Curious to see everyone's M1 status... (similar to the intent of sekker's post below but with a poll)

Excited for the enhanced performance, but in no hurry to have to replace all my software.

I voted no need because my 2017 work imac is fine for now. Still under warranty for another year, but I might replace my i3 TV mini with an M1 if the opportunity presents itself.

Honestly, I can get my job done on an 8GB 2009 13" MBPro w/SSD. I generally do that from the sunny kitchen until I need the screen space of the 34" 1440p monitor and then move into the colder office and get the rest done from a NUC (though the MBP can run the screen natively).

If I hadn't recently bought an i7 mini I would probably get an M1 mini. The mini is kind of my play machine so software compatibility is not a big deal.

My laptop is strictly a work machine and I was pretty excited about getting an M1 laptop until I discovered the main software I use on it is not M1-ready--and I'm not holding my breath on the company updating it.

Enjoying my MBP 2015, though it can get hot. My 2012 mini got new life breathed into it with an SSD. I'm good for now...

Maybe LibreOffice (ARM M1) will be ready sooner rather than later?

The early days of personal computing were driven by dominant application software. People bought an Apple II so they could run VisiCalc. Later on, people bought an IBM or some MS/DOS computer so they could run Lotus 1-2-3.

Right now, I'm holding on to my 2011 Macbook Air so I can still use iTunes with my two iPod Classics and iPod Shuffle. The 2018 Mac Mini running Catalina does not recognize those devices.

I can use current Adobe and Microsoft products with Catalina because my employer has a license for its employees. When I retire, I will fall back on using my purchased copy of Creative Suite 5.5 and my most recently purchased version of Office products. Both suites do not require subscriptions.

Every so often—in anticipation of the MBA breaking—I virtually shop for a newer Macbook Pro that can run a pre-Catalina OS. The faulty keyboard on many models is an issue. I'm also waiting and watching to see how/when Rosetta 2 will handle antique software.

I bought the 2020 iMac 27" 5K this summer when it came out.
I'm still happy with it and don't have any buyers remorse.
It was time for an upgrade and the screen is beautiful.
I have a little bit of FOMO, but that will pass.
MIL is due for an upgrade from a 2009 MBP. A new M1 Air should suit her needs just fine.
So I'll get to play with that.

I guess you could say I am holding out for now.

As a replacement for our home computer, any of the M1 models would be fantastic, but there is little need at the moment since everyone has work or school laptops that are mostly fine.

Only exception is my 2015 MBP work computer. We were *this close* to ordering new iMacs to replace them, which I would continue to use at home and maybe return to the office with in the future. The 2015 MBP is just "good enough" for my current tasks, and an M1 would be faster without a doubt however the 13" screen on MacBook Air or MBP would be too small IMO, so I would probably request a mini and then scrounge up another monitor to go with my current 20" Dell.

I do hesitate though, as our current upgrade cycle is about 5 years, and that these M1s are all entry-level model; I don't want to get stuck with one for that long since the higher end models will definitely be out before then. I guess it's really a budgeting question that I need to investigate.

You mean to arrive or to be offered? Because if it's the latter, I've good news -- the wait is over!

Based on your post, sounds likely you will never own an M1 chip mac.

All - google docs and iWork can handle Office tasks, no?

Holding steady for a 14" MB series here. Excited about a new machine for the first time in 10 years for me. Amazed that my '10 MBP is still my DD and works well.

Sorta... but libre office is more "office" like.

I haven't owned office since 2001, Libre office has been more than adequate (not a power office user)

Yes, I've come to that conclusion.

Back in the nineties, I needed to turn video clips into single-pane images to send to an illustrator. The illustrator would turn these frozen images into line drawings to support a how-to column for JUGGLE magazine.

I was ecstatic that my PowerTower Pro 225e could input video through iMovie and turn the video into cropped clips of just what I needed. Adobe ImageReady (at the time bundled with Photoshop) could turn that loop into a series of GIF documents.

I would prepare what I needed, start ImageReady, and go to bed. It took hours. Faster computers allowed me to perform similar tasks in minutes, rather than hours.

I can't imagine any software that I will need in retirement (probably next year) that I cannot already accomplish. Hardware is usually driven by software. (I can also still lust after the newest and greatest. Strangely, the cost of computers has come down so much that I could easily spring for a new Macbook Air without any strain. Can't think of a reason why, though.)

This 2013 MBPr 15 is fast enough, but it's throwing graphic glitches from time to time. I hope to hold out for at least the second generation.

Actually bought a 13" Macbook Pro I5 a couple of weeks prior to the M1. I was within the return period so I did and switched to the M1 version
