I've been setting up my new MacBook Air for the past few days. Suddenly, it won't accept my password to make changes in Sys Prefs. I know it's the correct password. i chose the same one i use for my iMac plus i used it about an hour ago to log in when i opened it up for the day.

and even more odd, i was able to use the password to turn off auto signing out but still not for changing privacy settings.

What could be going on?

Do you have separate Admin and User accounts? Are you entering the correct password for the account? To login you would use the User account password, but to change system pref you would use the Admin account and password.

There's only one account on this computer. Now, i went in and looked at changing the password for the one and only account with admin privileges and it seemed to be letting me do that which sort of freaked me out so i stopped because i kept thinking it had a pass word already and i shouldn't be getting that message.

maybe i'll follow through with that. hope it doesn't lock me out of something.

i did. nope.

no, i haven't called Apple but i did remember since it's new i do have tech support. i have a zoom thing i have to do but afterwards i'll risk trying to change the password.

i did the zoom webinar on my iMac and now that's done. ok. i'll restart. i have 24 hours before i need to have this resolved for a zoom live stream.

as Pooh would say it gets curioser and curioser.

Since I was able to access Change Password I did that. Didn't think it took because I still wasn't able to unlock the Security & Privacy Prefs.

So I restarted. And I was able to log in with the new password i thought hadn't gone through. BUT neither the new password nor the old one will unlock any Pref with a lock in the lower left corner. fortunately the new webcam i hooked up today seems to have gotten permission through to use the camera and mic so i should be ok tomorrow.

i will call Apple sometime tomorrow.

Well, turns out it's not me!

I took my problem to a support chat. it was immediately escalated up another level because as the Senior Technician informed me This is actually an issue that we've received reports on and it's actively being investigated by our Engineering team

so they would have had someone from engineering call me now but i decided i need to chill so they are calling me tomorrow at 1pm.
