Never had a chance to meet him in person. Enjoyed his posts on this forum.

Gene made me want to visit southern California again. These days, that doesn't happen often.

RIP, Gene.

I’m sad to be seeing this now. I had asked an attorney friend who lives in OC about trying to get Gene some help through Adult Protective Services last year when he was dealing with Mavis and her daughter. I felt bad that nothing came of it. I’ll miss Gene’s posts, wisdom, and wit.

Rest In Power, GeneL

I still use the hand drill I bought from GeneL. Good guy.

Not sure who Mavis was but we exchanged some email and wow she really seemed to be on his back in a major way. He wrote me that as he was writing an email to me she was bitching at him for writing an email to me.

I also enjoyed seeing his unique posts and view on things.
Always looked forward to the birthday margarita.

I did meet him, sort of, via FaceTime, but the work schedule
and 3 hour time difference limited our opportunities for
one on one conversation.

GeneL will be missed. As said above, here's to you, GeneL....smileys with beer

I hope that he and Mavis were able to be together when he passed.

Hi everyone,

Like all of you, I'm sorry to hear of Gene's passing. I know he wasn't well at the beginning of the year and that his family/life situation was just as difficult and complicated. There was definitely much happening in his life that he didn't reveal to us. He's in a better place now.

RIP Gene!

Gene was caught in between in between Mavis' affection for him and Mavis' fear of her daughter, and her daughter did everything possible to make sure Gene never had a chance in that battle; a battle that should never have happened.

If I remember correctly the daughter had control of Mavis’s finances, and presumably more control over Mavis’s life than what many consider. The daughter threatened to cut her mother out of her own home if Gene didn’t leave, as she was apparently afraid that her mom would give all her money to him. Whether this is true is anyone’s guess. As Gene and Mavis were not legally married (to the best of my knowledge but I could be wrong) I don’t think Gene could have gotten any more than Mavis would give him, and I believe the two of them lived together for some time, years perhaps.

My working theory then as now is that as Gene got sicker the daughter feared that he would siphon all of Mavis’s monies for his own care, leaving her destitute. I cannot comment on the relationship between those three, as I never met any of them. On the surface it seems a not unreasonable fear, but there was much MUCH more to the story that we never got.

Personally, I would tell the kid to take a hike (but probably much more colorfully). But as you say, there was more going on than we know.

Gene and Mavis had been together since at least 2002 or 2003, which is when I shared dinner with them.

Most of this is in Gene's old posts on this forum. I recommend reading those old posts before judging. I am not convinced that polite lies or euphemisms are any more "becoming" than discussing what we know or don't know.

What is more relevant is the purpose of this discussion. Will it make us better friends to those who are still living? Will it enable us to look more deeply into what is happening all around us? Or is it just rubber-necking?

It would be good to focus on the former; not so good if it's only the latter.
