Initial release of first run movies via streaming, including blockbusters, is now officially ‘a thing’. Will you be opening your wallet?

What about a price point less than $20?
For this poll, rather than effectively syphon off votes from the $20 choices, I’m going to stick with the offerings out there now to see if they’re able to attract people whose ideal may be less, but will still bite the bullet to see the first run good stuff.

No movie theater immersion?

An 80" OLED and surround sound would be great, but very few of those setups match a decent theater experience.

That may be good enough for some, and nothing wrong with that, for for me it's still not an immersive replacement.

Strictly a matinee attendee, I never had any of that.

I went, maybe brought a snack or two, enjoyed the movie, made a head call on the way out, and then got lunch somewhere.

There are many movies I don't mind seeing on a small screen when they come round, but a really good movie that I look forward to, has to be seen on the big screen, at volume levels that when appropriate, won't disturb the neighbors.

I rarely watch movies. In the last 10 years I may have seen 6 movies, and all were in theaters.

AT&T TVNow pro-rates when you add a premium to the next billing date so I only paid around $6 to add HBOMax until early January...worth it for the whole family to watch WW84...wouldn't have paid much more.

I reject your reality and substitute my own!

I can name the last six movies I have seen in a theater - none because I wanted to go.

1) Back to the Future (1985) - wife's first drive-inn
2) Schindlers List (1993) - wife's family
3) Saving Private Ryan (1998) - work-related
4) Treasure Planet (2002) - 6-year-old son
5) Red Tails (2012) - 16-year-old son
6) Ant Man and The Wasp (2018) - 22-year-old son (he paid)

So one theater visit every 5-6 years on average. All but one was a matinee. I never buy popcorn, candy, or drinks. I'm pretty sure the industry is failing because of me personally.

Yet I love films, just not the ones in today's theater. I live on TCM - give me old biopics, war movies, and musicals - for those I'm making popcorn (in a kettle, not the microwave).

I've said before that $40 is a bargain for a family film -- where I, as a dad, would bring my kids and maybe one of their friends to the theater -- and it comes with all sorts of bonuses. $40 would barely get 4 tickets with tax included. Non-snuck in candy, icees/drinks, pop corn. Inevitably rude crowd in the theater. No bathroom breaks. Meal before or afterwards.

Change that to a $40 viewing at home. Popcorn, drinks, pizza, etc. all at home already. Bathroom break? Just pause it. Wife, kids, friends of kids (current COVID situation notwithstanding, but even without). Meal at home.

$40 for a family man is an absolute steal.

That said; we had already ramped down in-theater film visits to occasional event movies and the odd RiffTrax Live (Fandango Event Show) before COVID even came along. And I'll stick with the sentiment that the whole "Theater Experience" schtick is overblown.

You left out waiting until the Blu-ray is released and on sale or in the bargain bin...or a bit longer until it's streaming somewhere for free.

I've never paid to stream a movie. I do have Netflix, so you can stream those movies.

I would never pay to stream a movie. I'd go see it at the movies.

When I'm confident that the pandemic is no longer a threat, I'll go back to the theaters for big premieres.

I have no intention of keeping any streaming service other than Netflix when that time comes. I'll take trials and mooch off of other people's streaming subscriptions as necessary until then.

...Watching movies on a big TV is an okay experience, but IMAX 3D is an experience worth paying for.

If I REALLY want to see it, I'll buy it for $20 and watch it when ever I want.

Otherwise I'll rent it and watch it once and call it a day.

My AT& T plan includes HBO Max, so I got to see WW84 for "free" last night. If I'd paid more than $8 to see in a theater I would have felt kind of cheated.

Amazon has a lot of good movies included with Prime and I'm not going into a crowd for nothin!

but IMAX 3D is an experience worth paying for.


I love IMAX 3D and 2D as well.

Either is a truly immersive experience.

Not all movies are worth the money to see them on an IMAX screen, when they are...

I am incensed when a PAID FOR streaming service decides they have to charge EXTRA to view content.

Even before the pandemic, I rarely went to a theater to see a movie. I travel(ed) a lot for work and saw a LOT of movies on airplanes - the rest when they finally hit the various streaming services.

So no, I'm not willing to pay extra - when I'm already shelling out big bucks for several services plus full package satellite.

No need to see "first run" - I can wait.

Last movie trip with the wife and 3 kids at the IMAX was over $100, plus dinner. Older kids and wife bought their own booze at the theatre.

A couple of those would buy me an 85".

I have a projector and 120" screen with surround sound, and have encountered noisy viewers in theaters many times, so I am happy to watch at home. I will go to IMAX projections, though.

I also like 3D, but you can get them to watch at home if you are willing to wait a bit and buy from non-US Amazon.

I am willing to pay $10/person for something I really want to see now, so it will depend on whether the wife wants to see it or not. I agree I would have felt cheated if I paid more than $5 for WW84, particularly with all the digital artifacts that were present that I usually do not see on most streamed movies (although the quality is always less than with BluRay)
