HD Radio: Useful or just another 'flash in the pan' technology?

Every so often, I'll hear a FM station promoting they're 'also on HD2...".
Any MRF members HD Radio adopters, opinions?
I'm not a luddite but don't see the need for it considering streaming, etc.

It's a solution looking for a problem.

With respect to FM, HD does NOT refer to High Definition. It is Hybrid Digital, where they typically compress the signal to an inch of it's life to fit a second channel in the same frequency bandwidth with more commercials.

Works nicely with NPR when I can jump to a different show when they go to the local politics hour for a nearby state.

Less nice when they inexplicably play country music on NPR2.

It harms the analog signal to make room for a poor digital one within the same space, while letting you think "HD" = high definition. Even their claim of "CD sound" is a lie, but that's how lossy digital is marketed.

The only applicable use would be to broadcast in actual Quadrophonic sound..... another flash in the pan idea.

Hey!

I had a Quadrophonic 8-track and the corresponding "Dark Side of the Moon" tape!

If I had enough speakers, I'm certain it would have sounded awesome!

IMO, it's biggest benefit is for the stations themselves. The ability to have multiple streams that can hopefully retain listeners and stabilize or boost ad revenue is the benefit. Radio stations are struggling to survive and this may be their last hope.

That being said, I pretty much only listen to broadcast radio as a last resort.

I work in the industry, for stations that broadcast in HD, and I agree with this assessment.

there is so much compression in the radio signal already ...

we had a quad control room in one of the studios in Manhattan I worked in..... for perhaps a year. Stoopit idea.

I did however see ELP in quad at the Nassau for BSS.
It was pretty cool, but mostly tricks of the pan, not for definition of sound. And back then, it was f'n loud and sloppy.

More than 2.1 for any listening environment of media, other than a big deal Hollywoo film (Private Benji), is just nonsense to my ear, no matter what Netflix delivery spec is.

I heard the JBL/Atmos demo at AES a few years back. Impressive, but better in a bigger room. I'm tired of having my junk being blown into my thorax for the sake of a Ferrari or jet drive by.

consumer electronics industry propaganda.

Makes AM sounds much better.

FM HD is OK - one of the stations runs its 'studio' recordings, basically w/o commercials.

Many others are now simulcasting an AM station.
