Gene L’s obituary
Posted by: Dennis R
Date: January 04, 2021 07:25PM
When I found Gene L’s Facebook page I contacted a few of his friends to find out about him. I just heard from a family member that sent this obit to Gene’s childhood friend Joel to put in a New York paper. She doesn’t know if he did but she sent it to me to inform our group.

Gene Leff passed away at Hoag Memorial Hospital in Newport Beach, CA on July 11, 2020 at the age of 82. Gene had been experiencing a failing heart condition for several years that left him low on energy, but never short on creative ideas. Gene grew up in New Rochelle, NY and lived in Manhattan in his early life before moving to Southern California where he married and had one son. After divorce, Gene ran his retail consumer electronics business while living in Laguna Beach. There he met his longtime soulmate, who he lived with for over 25 years. Later in life he spent his time staying in touch with his grandchildren and friends via computer. There is no service planned.

Gene was so much more than that obit.

82 years of life compressed into a paragraph? Doesn’t even begin to tell the story of Gene.

I was very sad when he posted about not knowing what to do or where to go when he had to leave Mavis’s house. It felt like his world was turned upside down. I was kind of frustrated with him because the voice inside me said, “you have to carry on. There are resources out there to help.”

If there are any forum members who met Gene in person...maybe at the El Matador Mexican Restaurant for a forum members get together, I would love to read any stories he told.

Thanks for finding this. He was much more than this short description, but I'm glad he was acknowledged formally.

Thanks for putting in the time on this, Dennis, we all very much appreciate it. Unfortunately with the challenges Gene faced in the past year or so, it seems there weren't enough people with a close connection to write more. Already the paragraph there was more than I knew as I never made it to the SoCal meetup.

Agreed.

I'd opine that most people are much more than their obituaries, but some don't even get a short description.

Gene's wasn't much, but it was something.

And though all too brief in toto, it was nice to see the acknowledgment of his online friends.
