OT: got what she deserved don't you think?
Posted by: samintx

I am not with out sympathy for people but this woman got what she deserved IMO...

Driving her Lexus down the road talking on her cell she didn't see the road block ROAD CLOSED. Went right thru barricades into the lake....in 9 feet of H2O.

No pulse when they rescued her but later she was revived. Guess she will live sans cell and Lexus. Will this cure her from sucking eggs? Probably not.

So, you wish death on someone for driving a Lexus and talking on a cell phone?

Wow, that seems pretty harsh.

At least according to the original post. Since there is no link, I have no idea what she is talking about.

She didn't die and Sam only commented on the loss of the cell and car.

Where anyone got a death wish out of that, I don't know.

She'll be right back tomorrow doing the same thing with another cell and another Lexus if she had decent insurance.
Probably no more than an annoyance.
I wouldn't assume she's learned anything.

Let's make a list of infractions and what others deserve for commiting said infractions.

This way, we will have pre-agreed what death, or near-death experiences are appropriate for behaviors we deem as gross negligence and reckless endangerment of others.

I believe it was one of Robert Heinlein's books where he commented (Paraphrased from a 35 year old memory )

"The law of Nature often sets the punishment for the crime of Stupidity. The punishment is often Death. There is no opportunity for appeal or parole. Sentence is carried out immediately."

Surprisingly to me, I'm with Sam on this. Here in Arizona we have washes (think: dry streams) that flood amazingly fast during our monsoon rains. Dept. of Public Safety places barricades where the road crosses a flooded wash, but people insist on going around the barricades and many get stuck. It can be very dangerous - cars can easily be swept away. It costs AZ taxpayers thousands to rescue these morans, so the "Stupid Motorist" law was passed to recover the cost of these rescues. Unfortunately it's seldom applied. If it were me, I'd leave 'em there and let nature take its course. Ok, rescue the passengers, especially children.

Imagine denying you were on the phone when there is a call log at the mothership.

From the topic's title I thought it was about A N Smith.

I'm so sick of the media going on and on about this apparent "junkie" with no particular appeal unless you like (store bought?) big @#$%& and having married an old multi-millionaire. There's definitely something wrong with our media and our mass mentality.

I've spent hours on the various TV news channels trying to get some information about an attack on a US military mess tent somewhere in Iraq, yesterday.

We have a family member over there and when I hear a pre-news hour "tease" about casualties I want to get the whole story.

It seems as if the American public is not meant to have the "hard" news reported to them and to have our brains numbed by tripe like the A N Smith junk.

Once again, I'm convinced of the general apathy of the American "public."

As I always say, "that's just my opinion, I could be wrong."

...I'm so sick of the media going on and on about this apparent "junkie"...

That you need to go on about it, when it wasn't even mentioned?

Gene, one could assume you have real "issues".

But then a lot of that goes on here. Like assuming that the woman didn't learn anything about her accident. Where anyone got the idea she'll be doing the same thing tomorrow, I have no idea.

Contrary to previous "sage" crackerbarrel wisdom, one *can* fix stupid. It would be stupid to think that it can never be "fixed".

I was in a store one day when two woman were talking. One mentioned how the cops harassed her (to the tune of a DUI arrest) just because she had a few cocktails. (That expression cracks me up!) She was complaining about how much trouble the arrest caused, and the expense.

The other woman replied that she too had been arrested for DUI. She said "That cop probably saved my life. My driving was videotaped and I was all over. I had a long ways to go, and I think I would have killed myself or somebody else.I still don't ever remember even getting in my car. I don't drink any more, and I'm happy."

The Lexus woman was negligent. It happens to smart people, and possibly more often to those who merely think themselves smart.

For me, it's difficult to feel smug or superior because somebody has died even if it's because of their own carelessness. Even the death of truly evil people fails to bring even a smile to me, though there may be some sense of relief, balance, or a sense of equilibrium.

I think this is a mean-spirited post. Wishing ill on anybody for mere foibles or bad habits is stingy and heartless.

They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

I'm not sure what she 'deserved.'
What happened was the logical result of driving without paying attention.
Frankly, I think people who get into accidents while talking on a cell should suffer the same legal consequences of one who is driving while impaired by chemical substances.

I guess I'm stingy and heartless.

Cell phone users are narcissistic, arrogant, rude, obnoxious creatures that apparently believe that others like listening to their boring personal affairs, like standing in line behind them while they talk ignoring the cashier holding out their hand for the payment. Additionally, these same cell phone users apparently think that you don't mind going 35 mph in a 45 mph zone while they talk and drive erratically.

Yes, some behaviors deserve sanction. And if I take amusement in the misfortunes of such self-absorbed spoiled people, I'm in good company. They deserve what they get.

Cell phones while driving need to be outlawed. No pulling over in an "Emergency Lane".
No teenage should ever be allowed to talk on a cell while driving - they already can't drive.

Exit the damn roadway and talk in a parking lot. What the hell did folks do before cell phones? Most who talk on cell phones do it during the entire duration of their commute. I know a lot of these folks - they call me. I won't talk to them.

It is amazing to see the folks that can't use a turn signal, can't keep their proper speed (just as many are at a near stop as are speeding), can't keep the car in their own lane, can't brake properly, and totally ignore everthing and everyone else on the road. They actually think they are paying full attention while entering or exiting into busy rush hour traffic or stop and go highway traffic. Until they hit you, or ME as it happened. The guy who hit me was being chewed out by his wife on the phone during Atlanta's crazy rush hour stop and go traffic.

In Georgia they recently passed a law in Dekalb County posted signs that said if any time a driver is involved in a crash that results in “death, injury or damage” in unincorporated DeKalb, that driver will be subject to up to a $500 fine. The new law will not apply within the city limits of towns like Decatur, for example, because the county does not have the authority to apply it to its incorporated cities.

The problem is Dekalb is a large metro county, but only one of a few. Drivers don't even know what county they are in.

There is already a law that covers "distractions" and that has done no good.

Try this one, no cell phone involved:

THE WASHINGTON TIMES -
Man stops car on Baltimore Beltway, causes fiery crash
By Arlo Wagner (Published February 28, 2007)

An 82-year-old man who stopped his car in a middle lane of the Baltimore Beltway {Interstate 695} while trying to exit near Pikesville, Md., yesterday caused a fiery crash involving two tractor-trailers that brought traffic to a standstill for hours, police said.
No one was seriously injured in the crash, which occurred shortly after 10 a.m. and backed up traffic for more than five miles.
Maryland State Police said William Rush, of Phoenix, Md., came to a stop on the Outer Loop's second lane from the left while trying to exit at Reisterstown Road. When he tried to cross two lanes of traffic on his right, he turned his 2001 four-door Cadillac directly into the path of a tractor-trailer loaded with 24 tons of agricultural lime. ....

82 years old, and friggin' stops dead cold in the middle of an Interstate highway! Gee, I wonder why the AARP constantly fights legislation requiring annual testing of drivers over 70.

Not necessarily so.

The comments by pseudo goody two shoes in threads such as this are always so amusing to me.

I'm with Suzanne on this one; the dumbass woman driver got what she deserved. At least she didn't take out a school bus full of kids on her way into the water.

Consequences that directly result from voluntary behavior are always deserved. Whether positive or negative makes little difference to me. People don't deserve just good things to happen to them. If she dropped her cell phone out the window while talking and broke it would you say that she deserved that?

It is not up to me to judge whether or not the negative consequences of a voluntary action are proportional to the severity of the action, so I don't do it. Sounds like there was no other human involved in the accident so what happened to her can be linked to nothing other than her voluntary behavior, nature decided the rest.

Spin it any way you wish, but your assumption about her doing the same thing tomorrow belies your statement about not assuming she learned anything.
