Cheap / Free Scanner Software?

Fired up the old Canon N1220U scanner just now to digitize a late '80s marathon finish line color photo (5x7) for a buddy. VueScan software still works after 10+ years, even on El Cap! But it's asking me for a license which I can't find. I know I bought one back in the day b/c I scanned a ton of photos. Any downloadable / open source scan sw alternatives? Obviously not gonna fork over $50 for a license for one photo scan.

I have ScannerMini app for my iPhone but I've ne'er used for photos. Anybody know if it works well for photos?

If a no on ScannerMini app, do the Walgreens and Targets of the world have self-service scanners? I want to say they do, with simple touch-screen operation. I can't imagine it's more than a dollar or two, but it would be nice to get a digi file for my buddy so he can just have that to make whatever size photo he wants. I don't know if these places let you keep the file. (?) Thanks.

Image Capture?

Never tried it myself, but I believe you can use it to scan.

Turn on your scanner... Open System Prefs... Click on Printers and scanners... click on your scanner in the list. Scan to your hearts content!

Harbourmaster - great idea but my scanner doesn't show up there. I do see my printers. I pressed button on scanner hoping that would wake it, no dice. But thanks.

btfc - thanks for link, download function is apparently no longer active

Got it. Couldn’t test, on my phone. That 3.8.1 version shows up in several other places online. It also seems that it is a TWAIN compliant scanner, so there should be a way to get it to work.

Plan B: Take a shot of the photo with your phone or digital camera.

Thanks, but I think I give up for now. I'm just gonna go to Walgreens and try to get it done there.

Try contacting Vuescan's developer at Hamrick.com. They may be able to track your registration based on your email address. I paid ~$40 for Vuecsan over 20 years ago and hadn't used it in years. I seem to recall entering my email address on their website to get an updated passcode a few years ago. Apparently my original registration was good for the "professional" version which is upgradeable indefinitely.

This is what I was going to suggest too.
