Hah. It used to be you could buy carfax for a month and run unlimited reports. People asking others to run reports was common.

A while back they switched to per report pricing. I think it's still that way. So no one really has free reports to run.

Most dealers have carfax and will provide it, but unless the cars price was very recently dropped something isn't right and a carfax may or may not be useful.

Jumping back in here...

Indeed, the CarFax days of some people having unlimited reports are over, unless you are a subscribed dealer. So asking anyone to run a freebie for you is not going to work.

When I purchased an older Tacoma a little over a year ago, I ponied up about $50 for three reports for my top contenders, as I was shopping mostly via Craigslist. Still I should have had the truck checked by a mechanic.

One of the biggest things I am always mentioning here is late reporting. This is in particular a problem with shady dealers. CarFax reporting can be slow enough that a collision is not reported until after a car is repaired and sold to an unsuspecting buyer. While CarFax will "guarantee" certain cars, Ive never been successful in claiming that.

So a good inspection by you or an independent mechanic is a good idea.

If you can get the VIN, call your Insurance Agent. They can check for claims on that. I did that and avoided a car that had "significant damage"
