The death of Costco Photo Centers is not being greatly exaggerated

Dear pRICE cUBE,

We are writing to inform you about the upcoming closure of the photo department at all Costco locations on Sunday, February 14, 2021.

Since the introduction of camera phones and social media, the need for printing photos has steeply declined, even though the number of pictures taken continues to grow. After careful consideration, we have determined the continued decline of prints no longer requires on-site photo printing.

Digital technologies allow consumers to do more with their photos, including the ability to personalize canvas, metal & acrylic prints, or create photo books, stationery, calendars and other gifts. We will continue to ship these high quality products and prints to your home or business through the Costco Photo Center website, CostcoPhotoCenter.com.

Costco’s home movie video transfer, passport photo, photo restoration and ink cartridge refill services will no longer be available after February 14, 2021.

Please pick up any remaining orders you have at your local Costco location by March 28th, 2021. We thank you for your business, and look forward to providing our innovative, high quality, personalized photo products to you in the future via the CostcoPhotoCenter.com.

Sincerely,

Costco Photo Center

Not going to be too long before it's going to be very difficult to get a passport photo around here.

You can take/provide your own photo to use for your passport, provided that it meets government requirements.

It is what it is.

Yes... But if one does not own a good printer, there are fewer and fewer places to get them printed. Not a big deal yet. Yet.

My experience with passport photo places in the recent past is that they mostly use crappy equipment and do a poor job. I've been much more successful with a white sheet background, iPhone zoomed in, and good lighting (outside on a cloudy day works great to give bright, diffuse light).

"In science it often happens that scientists say, 'You know that's a really good argument; my position is mistaken,' and then they would actually change their minds and you never hear that old view from them again. They really do it. It doesn't happen as often as it should, because scientists are human and change is sometimes painful. But it happens every day. I cannot recall the last time something like that happened in politics or religion." (1987) -- Carl Sagan

Sounds like a business opportunity!

CVS did my last one. Sucked, but got the job done.

It's going full circle where you have to send your "film" to a centralized lab and they'll mail the prints to you.

I still remember the most creative marketing campaign for film developing that I ever saw back in the 1980s. Somewhere in one of my boxes I think I saved one of these.

We used Walgreen's last time. I think it was $15--way overpriced, but they knew enough to tell us to take off our eyeglasses and have a neutral facial expression. I'd probably use them again rather than mess with it myself.
