Use Time Machine to Transfer One Drive to Another?

Following up on the failing video card on my wife's 2009 iMac, I'm getting a 2014 Mini from a fellow Forum member. I was expecting to run a replacement from an external drive, as I asked here:
[forums.macresource.com]

But the Mini has two drives in it, one an SSD, so I'm thinking I won't need to pull the drive out of the 2009 iMac and run it externally. I can just transfer its contents to the internal SSD in the Mini.

Question: Can I reformat the internal SSD and use the iMac's Time Machine backup to populate it, making it a duplicate of the iMac drive? Is there any potential problem doing this?

Just thought I'd better check. I'm pretty rusty on Mac tech these days—too much relying on "it just works." Except of course, when it doesn't.

Yes, you can restore the TIme Machine to either drive. Warning--restores from Time Machine are notorious for taking longer than just a straight copy from one drive to another.

I think you can do it in Migration Assistant. Fire up MA on the mini, and then point it at the Time Machine Drive.

I've used Super Duper and Carbon Copy Cloner in the past for such tasks.

Ive used all 3... cant say as tho any are "better" than the other.

SSD to SSD helps, its much faster, but mostly irrelevant if you are going from the old iMac since its limited to USB 2.

Just start migration assistant and let it run.

Well, I finally got the Mac Mini. Tried using Migration Assistant on the active SSD (it has an HDD and an SSD) from my wife's iMac Time Machine backup, but got some kind of mess with user IDs.

So I wiped the SSD clean, booting from the HDD. Now I'm trying Migration Assistant over the wired Ethernet network from the iMac to the Mini. But MA isn't giving me the option of which drive should be the target; it seems to assume that the boot drive must be the target.

Is there a way to pick the erased SSD to migrate to?

First of all, I suggest starting a new thread with your question; you will get much more action. Include a link to this thread.

I’d start with a fresh system on the drive that you want to migrate to. Try recovery mode on the mini (hold down command + r at startup)

Do you have an erasable external drive that works with both Macs?

Well, I thought some of last week's respondents to this thread would see a follow-up post.

For some reason Recovery doesn't seem to work on the Mini. Maybe because seller put fresh installs on both drives (I erased the SSD).

I do have a USB drive I can use to make an SuperDuper clone of the iMac drive, and then (hopefully) install that on the SSD in the Mini. I thought Migration Assistant would be simpler. But it doesn't offer me the option of migrating to the blank drive in the Mini.

Yes, always nice but not always a given.
