How do I "learn Flash and HTML" authoring fast?

Really kind of an ignorant question. But I have dabbled in both over the years but have not found any tutorials or books that could hold my interest. Any favorite books/tools you guys can suggest would be really helpful?

Why fast? I should have been learning this stuff six years ago, but nowadays it makes designers really desirable for even entry level jobs. Now it's time to put up an online portfolio with (dare I say it) "flair." I have a downloadable PDF book but it's so "old media."

thanks for your suggestions...

I don't know about the Flash side of things, but here are some books I've found useful:

Elizabeth Castro's Visual Quickstart guide on HTML
"Codin' for the Web" and "Stylin' with CSS", Charles Wyke-Smith
The two excellent books by Dan Cederholm

I've been in print design for a decade and a half and am just now starting to go through the same thing you are - picking up on some web skills. Are you hand coding or using an editor? I've recently purchased the following book on Dreamweaver and I found it to be relatively painless and fairly informative:

$25 per month doesn't seem so bad, since I have no cable tv and have quit television altogether. I need to get my learn on.

Tried to use NVU because it looked like Dreamweaver, but free. A little intimidating, so I'm looking into Dreamweaver.

Hey do you know of any good portfolio critique sites?

The Shelly-Cashman series has a Dreamwaever book. We use this series in my college classes, they are a visual and step-by-step instruction that teaches the fundamentals of the application. [www.amazon.com]

They have books on some of the other Dreamweavers as well.

ditto on the lynda.com route. I used it myself to learn some flash last year, and it was great. I have a hard time picking things up sometimes when I have to read a book or a bunch of websites. It was a lot easier way for me to be taught rather than having to search for things that I didn't even really knkow what to look for.

good luck.
