Tablet versus using iPad as a tablet?

Hi all,

Subject line pretty says it all. I'm thinking of a tablet for use in (online) class, where it would be very nice to be able to write things out for students. My old Wacom tablet that I might have used for this got pretty badly damaged in HC Zeta (flying glass will do that!), but even before that, Wacom wasn't particularly good about supporting it any more.

I'm seeing some tablets on Amazon that seem reasonably priced (example: [www.amazon.com] ) ... but I also have an old iPad that I'd been using with Duet as an extra screen. (I'm kinda stuck on Mojave for now because of 32-bit apps that I can't easily upgrade.) Duet is a rather clunky solution though.

What say you?

I use a iPad Pro with Sidecar and an Apple pencil.

iPad Pro using Notability via Sidecar through Zoom works well. But you'd need to be on at least on Catalina to make that work. Sidecar can be a little laggy at times when it comes to online work - bandwidth on BT isn't great, and that's the bottleneck.

Can't comment on your idea with the tablet, but if Duet allows you to write on documents or in an app like Notability, then depending on how old your iPad is, that might be the least expensive solution. Not having used Duet, it's hard to evaluate whether or not it would work.

Followup: turns out that Duet doesn't work on Metal-based Macs, which means I can't use it with my main desktop, a 2012 Mac Pro.

So... I will either have to be looking at another piece of software that'll do it, or just getting a tablet. The tablet may be the easier solution, though it's unfortunate that the iPad can't be of use. (I can't upgrade to Catalina so as to be able to use Sidecar...)

Yes, I've looked at that one, but it's already half the price of a tablet...
