The struggle continues ... upgrading Mac Pro to Mojave
Posted by: timg
Date: January 20, 2021 01:03PM
ok, this is a continuation of my previous post ...

I did manage to get an installer downloaded and written to a flash drive.

booted it up and installed Mojave, no issues as far as I could tell.

When it reboots after install, the grey screen with the Apple logo comes up the progress bar gets to about 95%, then the video signal disappears and the monitor goes off.

I've tried both DVI ports, only one give the boot screen. I will try the HDMI port as soon as I get a monitor up there that has an HDMI port. I will try the display port as well, but for that I need to find a display port cable. I'm sure I have one, but not sure what box it is in just yet.

Anyone have similar experiences or any helpful suggestions?

How long did you wait after the monitor went off before you pulled the plug? There are periods in the install when this exact thing happens - just let it go for a while.

Funny answer - 'clearly a sign to get an M1 Mini!'

Yeah, let it run. In some cases it takes a very long time to configure
its boot configuration as kernel extensions are loaded & tested.

Yes, just wait. The installer progress bar and time estimates have been grossly inaccurate for years. It's done when it's done, and I really have no idea what it's doing during all of those long periods.

upgraded from high sierra. as for how long I waited, it was overnight. still no video and on reboot, it showed the progress bar for booting went to about 95% showing the grey screen, then the video went off, but the computer was still running.

It’s a blessing in disguise. Attempting to run Mojave from a hard drive is not a pleasant experience.

What kind of video card is installed?

Not sure if this is any help but I had the same issue with an older update some time ago. I wound up downloading the installer again, wiping and creating a new thumb drive installer.

(To be clear, apply ALL High Sierra updates before proceeding to Mojave)

Video card is a Radeon 7850. shows in system profiler as fully supported and AppStore believes the machine is qualified for Mojave.

High Sierra was fully updated before I started.

I can verify an Apple (or flashed) 7850 works fine with Mojave.
With just a graphics card and no other PCI cards installed, that narrows
the 'suspect list' down to something on the native SATA-II bus or one
of the cables.
Have you reset the SMC and PRAM?
You also might try it with only two RAM modules installed.

redo the OS download and installer creation

I've done this as a last resort once and it WAS the issue

Yup, that was what worked for me.

tried the pram zap. was a bit different in that the video went dead earlier in the grey screen, but then came back the grey screen after several minutes with a new progress bar, but again, before it finished, the screen went dead again. waiting to see if it ever comes back at the moment.

I will try to redownload the installer, but I'm not sure if that is really the problem since it seems to work just fine.

one note, booting into the recovery disk also does the same thing with the dead video.

It's not working just fine - I'm pretty sure that what you are experiencing is exactly what I experienced when I decided to redo the installer.

I will do that next. just giving it ample time to try to work out its issues.

ok, went ahead and re-downloaded the installer and re-created the boot USB, but ultimately got the same results.

When the installer finishes and says the system needs to reboot, it does reboot, but then it does what I was describing - Grey Apple logo screen with progress bar, get's to somewhere past halfway then the video goes dead.

this really shouldn't be this hard ... sad smiley

OK, I also tried a fresh install on a new partition and I am getting the same issue.

Last things to try - find my display port cable to see if that port is active, find an HDMI monitor to hook it up to, fresh install of 10.13 then try to upgrade from there.

any other ideas?

Check the Console log to see if there are any clues there.

If I could get it to boot I would.

Booting in Verbose mode might also get you there.

timg, sent you a PM.
re-created the boot USB; make sure it's a USB-2 drive
as USB-3 devices can cause install problems.
