I had heard there was an explanation for this, but had never seen it.

That was good. Watching Ali knock out others the exact same way is interesting.

Saint Cloud, Minnesota, where the weather is wonderful even when it isn't.

Be sure to watch When We Were Kings - the documentary about how Ali beat George Forman in Zaire. NO ONE thought he could win. Many thought he'd get injured or killed.

My friend and I were talking about how he came up with Rope-a-Dope. One thought was he was tired and rested on the ropes and it came to him right there, but probably not.

His corner was freaking out during the fight as he let Forman punch away - over and over they yelled at him to get off the ropes. I think that after a round or two, he realized that he could withstand/effectively defend the punches and knew that Forman had never fought a long fight. In retrospect, it was the only way to win.

That was. the strategy before the fight started . The ring ropes were so loose that he could lean away from blows .

Not quite as visceral, but still very good viewing is Regina King's One Night in Miami.

Aldis Hodge has come a long way since leverage.

He was terrific in City on a Hill.

I didn't see Compton or Underground.

I personally find Miami more entertaining than any sweet science stuff.

And, hat's off to science.

I'll add that Bruce Lee demonstrated the tremendous power he could deliver in a strike with the 'inch punch', and he was a fraction of the size of Ali.

Lee also demonstrated that it can be more efficient to evade the punch in the same manner as Ali rather than wasted time and energy blocking it.

And I love the boast that Ali frequently made 'I'm so pretty', never being disfigured.

For all the prideful boasting of his boxing prowess, this is my favorite quote:

"I am an ordinary man who worked hard to develop the talent I was given," he said. "Many fans wanted to build a museum to acknowledge my achievements. I wanted more than a building to house my memorabilia. I wanted a place that would inspire people to be the best that they could be at whatever they chose to do, and to encourage them to be respectful of one another."

Again, not a box fan, but he was a really interesting human being.

I really wonder what he might have accomplished as a humanitarian, had he not been taken by Parkinson's.

That is a great quote.

“I hated every minute of training, but I said, 'Don't quit. Suffer now and live the rest of your life as a champion. '”Jun 3, 2016

I have never been a fan of boxing, but the Muhammed Ali Museum in Louisville is surprisingly (to me) interesting.

Spalding University has a bicycle hanging over the front door of the student union building. It was a bicycle stolen from him that got him into boxing in a gym in the basement of that building. He was fuming out loud about the stolen bike, threatening whoever it was that took it. A policeman overheard the rant and took him to the boxing ring to learn how to channel the anger. The rest, as they say ...
