Lots of people out of work. Losing their homes. Desperate to pay their bills. Desperate for food and shelter in the winter.

Kids not in school. School systems in chaos.

A lot of people racking up hospital bills. Dying.

Surprised there's not a whole lot more.

Sadly, times have changed from what "was" when many of us grew up. "Back in the day" most people knew their neighbors and their neighbors families. That simple fact meant that theft was less likely because anyone showing up with a new tool, bicycle etc that matched items recently stolen would have a lot of explaining to do. Today in many communities, people do NOT know who lives down the block (or even right next to them). Also today, a thief is MUCH more likely to NOT being held accountable if they are caught. It often seems to be somebody else's fault (or something else: ie drugs, feigning mental illness etc). Until that changes and we return to personal responsibility, that's NOT likely to improve. old fogey smiley

A couple of years ago I had the window on my pick up smashed . Som items were stolen . Th e deputy that took the report said they wouldn't find who did it . Then asked if one of the 3 houses of meth addicts in the area were probably responsible . about a year later they caught someone breaking into a pickup . A drunken meth addict from a town 40 miles away . So knowing your neighbors doesn't help .

What I remember that kept our things safe wasn't so much who we knew, but that stealing just wasn't done. It was just something you wouldn't do. We never locked our front door, bikes were left unlocked. Ours was just a bland working class neighborhood.

What has changed is the gap between the haves and have nots.

Thieves (and other criminals) prey on people in their own neighborhoods.

It's a good degree of lawlessness out there nowadays. Petty theft is not really even a crime anymore where I've lived.

Oh, please. It’s the economic conditions. Homicide rates in the 20th century peaked in the early years of the Great Depression and were only (barely) exceeded 50 years later (which many scientists believe could be related to lead poisoning).

I don’t buy the “kids these days” crap. Desperate people do desperate things.

The thieves that shop lift and pick pocket at the mall and break into cars there are also out of work - so they have to go where the people are - in the neighborhoods.

Not to put too fine a point on it, most states define theft of property from a building as burglary.

Robbery is theft from a person.

Robbery poses a much greater threat to people than burglary, so it helps to use categorized the crimes accurately.

And not based on any medical evidence, just my own daily observances;
many of the 'pandemic related hospitalizations and deaths' could have
been avoided if only there was some "personal responsibility" taken.

My wife has had her SUV broken into several times in the last several years. The only thing of value ever stolen was a GPS. We called the police and they took fingerprints, and she gave them the serial number. About a month later, she got a call that her GPS was pawned at a pawn shop about 45 minutes away. We went with the cop to go pick it up, and get the info about the person who pawned it. It wasn't the same person who matched the fingerprints. She got a letter a couple of months later about the trial, since she had said she was willing to testify. The person being tried must have been the ringleader. She never had to testify though, so we're assuming he plead guilty.

I think it is probably the opposite. At least around here people travel into the neighborhoods, not steal from their own. Which plays into the know your neighbors bit, if you know everyone it is easy to point out the people who don't belong.
