Seeking tips on how to manage multiple browser windows
Posted by: Todd's keyboard

My work flow requires having multiple browser windows open. Some of the pages require passwords. Even though Safari remembers the passwords, I still have to click through to load them.

At the end of the day, it's easiest to just Quit Safari and then open the pages I use for personal reasons.

I'm assuming there is some app that can open sets of pages with one click. Providing appropriate password prompts would be a bonus. (I can imagine I already have some app that was included in some software package I have previously purchased.)

Any suggestions?

As far as opening multiple specific tabs, I always used to put all my "default" sites into a bookmarks folder then just right-click on it and say open all in tabs. And it would do so. If I had any logins, I would use 1Password and once invoked it would stay unlocked until I had logged into all the sites.

Um... I'm a little confused.. (story of my life? LOL).

Why are you using separate windows, rather than tabs?
Multiple windows would be a freaking nightmare to manage.
I don't use Safari often (I use it for a single web site, and use Firefox and Chrome split evenly for everything else at work)...
Both Firefox and Chrome, you can bookmark an entire SET of tabs, and reopen all of them.
You can also set a particular "tab set" as your default browser behavior when opening.

Hope this helps!

Hmm, I've never considered using Tabs before. I agree, I do keep having to move and re-size multiple windows, which takes up time.

My initial reaction is that I need to see multiple items—from different windows—at the same time. I do a lot of copying and pasting to grab information from one online list over to send e-mails. I'll experiment with Tabs, though.

As others have said, you should look into some existing browser features.

Using tabs instead of windows, or maybe a small number of windows each with multiple tabs, like a work window and a personal window.

Using groups of bookmarks, and opening the entire group into tabs in a window.

Having the browser by default restore windows/tabs from the previous session.

“ Having the browser by default restore windows/tabs from the previous session.”

‘Reopen all Windows from Last Session’ might be helpful.

History menubar.

History menubar.

I was thinking Safari>Preferences>General>Safari Opens With>All Windows From Last Session

Then no need to remember to do it each launch, or accidentally forget and lose all of that previous session state.

yeah, you want tabs, not windows. "restore all tabs" should log you right back in -- unless the sites have a time limit.

FF, 4 windows, maybe 50 tabs, a couple more windows collapsed.

Also have Safari (in the back) and Chrome running at the same time -- on a different sceen.

Tabs can make your life a little easier, but for seeing different stuff at the same time, multiple windows is the way to go.

I use Safari, and a lot of tabs most of the time, and multiple windows occasionally for that reason.

It's only partial solution, but a tab can be pulled from a window to form a new window.

I say partial because there's no way to slide it back into the tab bar, that I know of.

There's a Merge All Windows option in the menubar, but it does just that, and I seldom want that.

I pull tabs from time to time just for A/B comparisons.

Tabbing back and forth between two or more tabs just doesn't work for me.

As the tabs are seldom related, there's not often a need for A/B comparison.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Have experimented a bit with Tabs today. It will take some time to understand how they work and to feel natural. I'm sure I unwittingly closed several Tabs (and Windows) throughout the day. I can see it will help.

If it were not for the limited desk space, I would just buy a second monitor. In fact, I have an unused 19" monitor that would be very handy, but no place to put it.

Try ctrl-Tab to move around!

Cmd and the top left key, not escape... to swap windows.

Right-Click/Ctrl-Click on a Tab(s) to pin it, among other functions.

You can reorder your Tabs by Click-Drag.

Safari also has some Tab preferences you might check out.

Yep

I will spend my whole day pushing Command + ~ to fly thru windows, and option + command + arrow keys to move thru tabs all day. (Control key is less natural for me.)
