I hate it on everything.

I remember reading decades ago, back when REAL research on human interactions with computer interfaces was being conducted, how reading dark text on white backgrounds (as enabled by modern GUIs of the era) is SO MUCH BETTER for our eyes than reading white text on dark backgrounds (as we had been required to do since the dawn of the personal computing era).

And you know what? I BELIEVE IT.

That’s why I thumb my nose at the current dark GUI movement — it’s a fad, very much like the vinyl movement for music reproduction. Give it a few years and we’ll see opinion on both matters swing back to where it was thirty years ago.

I have it set to Auto and like the dark mode at night.

I came to prefer it all the time on my Mac until Catalina. The contrast in the UI there is nearly non-existent light or dark, and ticking the contrast boost only draws lines around stuff, giving everything a stupid 2D effect.

I don't care for dark mode either.

The current “dark mode” fad got its start about a decade or so ago with the observation that dark mode can benefit pro computer graphic artists by enabling better color accuracy and reducing eye fatigue in the performance of their work.

I understand the benefit of and fully support the use of dark mode in that context. I also freely acknowledge the ratio of image-to-text viewing on computers by the average user is far higher today than at any time during the first twenty-five years of, say, the Macintosh’s existence.

However, the benefit to pro users does not translate to dark mode being better for ALL users. Karen does not need pro-level color accuracy when viewing or editing (AS IF!) her latest batch of selfies.

Thank goodness we at least still have the option to choose between light and dark mode. Unfortunately, the same can not be said for many of the other Human Interface elements that have been abandoned trashed by the current generation of GUI designers in the interest of “sleekierness.”

I'm the outlier here.

I love Dark Mode on every device and Mac.

Night Shift, maybe not so much.

It's somewhat jarring and disappointing when on a site or in an app in Dark Mode, and I move outside that bubble.

But that's why Apple, in it's wisdom, provided an O-N, O-F-F toggle.

I don't think it saves any energy except for OLED devices, unless DM dims the backlighting on LCD devices.
