So now I'm a Turtle Whisperer (rescue story with pics)
Posted by: tuqqer
Date: February 04, 2021 01:10PM
Today, my wife raced back to our house from a walk exclaiming that a turtle was trapped about 8 feet off the shore of one of the local ponds about a quarter mile from our place, stuck somehow and barely above the surface. We quickly put on some boots, grabbed some scissors and a rake—like some kind of professional turtle rescuers—and drove over to the pond. Immediately saw this poor critter was being pulled down by something. I waded out and saw that he/she was obviously exhausted, and offered no resistance. Gently lifted the turtle out of the water and saw that it was wrapped up in yards of monofilament fishing line, hooks, sinkers, and a few long waterlogged sticks, all weighing this poor creature down.

What a mess, all wrapped around the turtle's neck and feet. The clippers worked great, and cleared it in a couple minutes. She still had some around the feet because it was doing its turtle thing all pulled in, but there were clearly no hooks or bleeding. So after a bit, I placed the turtle back in the shallows and waited until it had enough energy to start to move again, and to make sure that all 4 limbs were clear. It swam off and we watched it for a few minutes more to see it resurface a few times, swimming back to us to check us out, and then a few other turtles from around the pond came up to the rescued turtle and all stared back at us. A great moment.

NOTE: monofilament fishing line takes approximately 600 years—no joke, look it up—to decompose. If you or the kids fish, please teach them to always go to great lengths to recover any lost line; otherwise it will remain a trap for important critters for centuries to come.

Well done ! Someday in the future, the turtle, having sworn an oath, and spent the intervening years practicing ninjutsu, will come to your rescue...

That is seriously jokingly what we thought as 4 or 5 turtles all swam from different parts of the pond to come check on Rescue Turtle and then turn to stare at us on the shore. We couldn't believe our eyes. Like something out of a Disney flick.

Great job! That good deed should come back to you.

We always stop and retrieve fishing line when we see it while paddling... then it annoys us for the rest of the paddle and drive back. I have probably cut and picked up miles of it.

That is an interesting techno glitch. I wonder what caused that. (I just tried viewing this URL from my rarely used Firefox (v 85.0 64-bit) and the pics came up okay. I did paste those photos' url from a weird source, which didn't end in a classic .jpg, so that may have been the issue.

My FF did not want to show the pix. Fine in Safari.

AND KUDOS TO YOU GUYS! Bless you for saving that poor little chelonian. I LOVE LOVE LOVE how all the other turtles gathered to check on their pal...and then thanked you all together with their turtle salutes. So_amazingly_beautiful.

I read most of this thread aloud to my wife. Tears in my eyes. I always brake for turtles and try to help them cross the road, huge fan here. Many species in the US are on the path to extinction from stupid drivers not looking out, and of course the fisher trash ugh. Those turtles will never forget your and your wife's kindness. THANK YOU.

Well done.

I had to laugh as when I read the text story, I was picturing a large sea turtle. I was surprised when the pictures loaded.

That is both awesome and just a liiiiiiitle bit scary.

I'd be careful near the water, if I were you.

And great job saving that turtle.
