Wilt wasn't purchased. Its way more interesting than that. Wilt engineered a trade when the owner of the Sixers chose to not honor the promise of of a recently deceased co owner that promised Wilt up to half ownership of the team upon retirement.

Wilt and the surviving owner argued about it and the owner agreed to tear up Wilt's 3 year contract for a one year one. He'd also remove the reserve clause provision thus making Wilt an underground free agent. Many years before free agency. The Lakers and Sonics battled it out for Wilt and the Lakers won. They traded 3 players to the sixers.
