Safe site to DL Catalina?

I'm wanting to install 15 onto my external drive as a bootable so I can use my Brother 7840 now disabled by Big Sur. Got the combo update from Apple but it needs a version of 15 to install it. Kinda nervous about some of the sites that offer it.

In Safari under Preferences... Select General Tab... Second pull down from the bottom of that Tab says "File Download Location"... Under "Other" I would imagine that you could select an external drive?

On Big Sur here...

General rule of thumb is to leave at least 10% of a startup drive as free space, i.e. 50 gigs for a 500 gig drive. Time to clean house. Clean out downloads. Do a Safe Boot. Empty Trash.

Doesn't give me that option. Right click is supposed to do it but my BT mouse won't right click, even after deleting the plist file and rebuilding it. PIA. I got it going after cleaning out some files. but now I gotta head out to get my COVID vac. Don't want to miss the appointment. Thanks for the help.

I am on Mojave and I have that option in Safari preferences.

Not as handy as you'd think... If you've never downloaded that OS version before, it won't allow you to download prior versions.
For me, it's utterly useless (I missed a few versions along the way...).

Go ahead and follow those App store links to the App store for a version never linked to your AppleID before.
If you can find a way to do it, I'd be most pleased to be wrong about that.

I cannot download Catalina, High Sierra, or Yosemite... because I missed downloading them on their first run.

Paul,
I downloaded Catalina for my husband's mini last weekend. He had been way back on Yosemite and had not DL'ed anything in between.
I had to go to that Apple support website linked above, then log into the App Store under his Apple ID to get the DL, IIRC. I don’t think I even used Safari to get to the Apple Support website.

Maybe it is because you are trying to DL from a higher version and I was going up.
I re-read your post. I think I misunderstood it the first time.

Yes. Wasn’t working for me for a while; then I realized that I was using Firefox, and after I switched to Safari everything worked fine.

I'm giving up. I can't find the article again but I believe that Apple recently put the kibosh on installing a bootable drive from their site. I've DL'd it twice and when its done it says something about not being allowed then immediately deletes it.

It just works

It is telling you that it won’t install Catalina over a Big Sur install.

Does it leave a Catalina Installer in ‘Applications’?

What model Mac and what OS did it originally come with?

Do you have a backup or clone?

Got it working by reseting the printer in preferences. Only took me a month of stumbling around the inter webs to get to this info.

Yeah, the installer's there but it won't run (see screen shot above) and it won't copy to the external drive. Moot point now. Got the printer functioning again, which is all I wanted to do.
