Need clarification: Canon Powershot S3

I can't quite figure out what the specs on the Canon Powershot S3 mean -- specifically, what is a "hybrid DSLR"? Am I actually viewing the image through the lens? Thanks.

I think it means that there is no SEPARATE optical viewfinder, i.e. you always view the image though the lens. Other P&S cameras have a small optical viewfinder which helps in sunny days when it's hard to view the LCD, but it may lead to parallax error for close subjects, and when you want precise framing.

So, when I look through the viewfinder (not the digital display) am I looking through the lens as with a traditional SLR?

well, when you look into the "viewfinder", you also see an "LCD" image. There is a smaller LCD located inside the viewfinder, there is not a REAL SEPARATE OPTICAL viewfinder. The image always comes though the lens.

No. He or she asked about a "traditional SLR" which has a beutiful through-the-glass look at the world. No electronic facsimile. Try not to be such a moran, space-time.

It is fancy marketing speak. This is not an SLR. It is SLR-like camera working on the principle that the image being projected is what your ship is going to see in the viewfinder but it is an lcd imge. No mirror flips up so the camera can record an image.

One way or another, the S3 IS does a great job and I'm glad I bought one for my S/O.

She finds it easy to use and the results have been remarkable.

Oh yes, I'm glad I got her the Lensmate [www.lensmateonline.com], a clip-in lens cap and a UV filter (she seems prone to putting a finger on her lens grinning smiley)

Enjoy!

"Moran" is an inside joke.

space-time...... I caught the fact on my original read that you correctly answered the original question that related to the S3IS, so you are exonerated. Brady was explaining an SLR which was not part of the original question.
