My Krispy Kreme on Ponce de Leon, Atlanta burned down...

[twitter.com] (check it out!)

This is the legendary Midtown location. In the 90's I'd go to buy 2 donuts, think they were kinda small and ask for 4, then say just make it an even 6. They'd say for 2 bucks more I could get a dozen and I'd say cool, then they'd say, for a few bucks more you make it 2 dozen, so I'd always walk out with 2 boxes of them cry smiley

When I first came to Atlanta in 1976 for grad school, I drove to the school very early in the morning as I arrived in Atlanta and it was closed. So I drove around a bit and found that Krispy Kreme on Ponce. I was from the Bay Area and had never been in the south. The Hot Now sign was lit and I went in, bought a couple and thought I'd died and gone to heaven. As I recall there was a window where you could watch the doughnuts being made and dunked in the glaze as they trundled along on a conveyer belt. I hope the burning wasn't complete and they rebuild.

We have a Krispy Kreme in our town as well as a Dunkin. I stay away from both because I can't stop once I start. I've never been tempted by the ones for sale in a box in Kroger; if they're not fresh off the conveyer they don't matter to me.

truly sad, but not "burned down"...

That's sad. I remember going there after a night out at bars in Virginia Highlands, and easily putting away 6 hot donuts.

Oh no!
I didn’t hear about this. That place is iconic. I hope it reopens soon.

At my first job out of college we used to have booth at some of the industry trade shows. I was usually in charge of our trade shows and had to be there all day. In the morning we would have coffee and donuts for our customers. I do not want to even think how many donuts I would eat each day.

In the "I did not know that" department, the current owner of that store is Shaquille O'Neal.

Hmm. Never had a KK doughnut. When I still lived in Flint, they had'em at the local Sam's Club, cold, in a box. They didn't look too appealing.

Then they opened an actual Krispy Kreme in front of Sam's. I was always going to try some fresh, but never got the opportunity. They closed that location after a year or so. I thought it was odd they closed so soon, and never heard why.

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Drive by quite a bit but haven't had one of their donuts in years. It IS an icon and I hope they can update but keep the same look.

The cold ones are Not Good. When I was in junior high we had a fundraiser that involved selling boxes of Krispy Kremes. I'll never forget the stench when all the boxes were delivered to the gym for kids to gather up and take to the people who'd bought them.

Hot Now, different story...

Cold Krispy Kreme donut is part of my morning bicycle ride. When they got em I get the apple fritter.
