Connect two Macs via ethernet cable

I would like to connect my MDD G4 powermac to my Titanium powerbook via ethernet- both computers are running 10.4.8. They both have airport cards and can see each other using the wireless router, but I am hoping that copying large files will be quicker through a wired connection. I know that I do not need a crossover ethernet cable- but the rest of this is driving me mad.

Personal File Sharing is turned on on both computers. Appletalk is turned on. Built in ethernet is shown as active. I manually gave both computers an IP address- was this the right thing to do?

Neither computer can see the other through the wired connection

Please help if you can- I need to work from home for a few days, and it will be much easier if I can share files between the computers!

Thanks

cheers

Can they ping each other?

If not, make sure the IP addresses for the ethernet adapters are on the same subnet and have the same subnet mask.

shouldn't need a xover cable as OSX is smart for that.
I'm fairly certain in the past, I haven't had to give anyone an IP address, nor tuned on AT.
I turn on sharing and toggle to Network and they show up on each other.

I hate computers at times.

Whilst I was writing the above message, I restarted the Titanium. I can now see the Titanium from the MDD, and it took less than 2 minutes to copy a 380MB folder across- compared to 2 hours through the wireless router. Thing is, I wasted nearly two hours getting to this point!

Thanks MGS for the quick reply- I should have checked pinging straight away, but didn't. This may not turn out to be my most productive day ever.

cheers

you should just be able to go to "network" and see the other mac

you dont need IP addresses or appletalk

when i did tech support, i hated to ask people "have you rebooted your Mac?" but i had to.

same with routers, printers, hubs, switches... cycling power can do wonders.

When I have finished needing this for real work, I am going to wipe the invented IP addresses, turn off appletalk..... and see if I can still see the computers.

Not sure why the restart made a difference, but there you go.

I used to routinely restart my Macs under OS 9 when I wanted something to be recognized, or to change some of the system settings.... it just rarely seems to be necessary under OS X.

I still reboot when things aren't quite right. It fixes so many anoying little things (like memory leaks in some programs)

That ability is in hardware, not in software.

It is what it is.

Yep, any GigE adapter is auto-sensing.

I think anything Apple has made since about 2000. GigE on up I believe for the towers.
