nwyaker,

If you're totally done with 32-bit applications and/or everything you use is compatible with Catalina, considering going with it. If you're in my situation and still require apps that are 32-bit and/or are incompatible with Catalina (and newer), go for Mojave. This assumes everything you're using is compatible with Mojave. The usual precautions apply.

Backup prior to moving to the new OS.I always perform a full clone backup prior to upgrading the OS. That way, if something goes wrong, it's super easy to restore the machine to its pre-upgrade configuration. I moved to Mojave quite a while go. I have a clone backup of my current configuration and still have clone backups of High Sierra, Sierra and El Capitan. 'course, the older clones are on platter drives which I stopped using some time ago. Still have them, though.

What Mac? SSD? How much RAM?

Do you use lots of older software? MS Office? Adobe CS apps? Quicken/Quickbooks?

How do you feel about change?

New Mac in the near future?

High Sierra at least.

Thanks Robert. Install will be on USB3 external, so not mucking up other OS.
This drive dedicated to one application.

Catalina has been great for me, no issues. I should point out I don’t use mail and all my apps are approved for it.

I say it depends entirely on the computer model, the hardware installed and the software want to use.

I'm on Mojave for MS Office 14 (mainly Excel).

Just looked it up. Its 2010! That is a long run!
