Probably slapping cars that got too close while cycling in nyc. Or maybe flipping off drivers. Or maybe just cycling in traffic in nyc.

I’ve probably done stupider things that don't come to mind at the moment, but when I was 7 or 8 my friend and I found some old shotgun shells in his basement. We emptied the gunpowder out and used it to make a pipe bomb. Thankfully, it just fizzled out when we tried to light it.

Driving drunk also comes to mind.

I don't know about the most dangerous but the one that sticks in my mind happened when I was a Forest Service archaeologist during a survey in the mountains on the Gifford Pinchot.

This was pre GPS and cell phones, late 80's or early 90's. I would often go out alone for the day, mostly looking at proposed timber cutting areas as part of the cultural resource management process. I had a radio but no coverage due to the mountainous terrain and I was 2 or 3 miles away from my Forest Service rig.

I was interested in a cliff line that looked good for rock shelters or caves and was crossing a talus slope to get at them when I lost my footing and began to slide down towards a drop off of several hundred feet. I went spread eagle but kept sliding down towards the cliff edge for what seemed like a long way, but was probably only about 10 or 15 feet. When I finally stopped sliding I had to carefully inch my way back up. Seemed to take forever. A few times I would move up a little then slide back down a little. I kept thinking that they'll never find my body.

Drunk driving . Taping a ballbearing to the primer of a shotgunshell . Then tossing them in the air to come down on asphalt .

I’m sure there is worse, but all I can think of right now is climbing 25’ up a wet, thin hemlock tree with no ropes (in rain boots), kayaking class II rapids at flood stage in a non-whitewater boat, taking that same boat (it also was not a sea kayak) out through a confluence into the open ocean, riding any horse any time, no questions asked, as a kid, and making my F-150 max out the speedometer when I was 17 (not a closed road or anything, but nothing bad happened - not even a ticket).

I grew up in a house where we had a basement fire, which my dad tried to extinguish with Tupperware containers of water... he also mixed bleach and ammonia accidentally. And then put a running chainsaw down on his thigh "for a minute". My mom got bitten by several random dogs, strangers or her own, over the years... LOTS of ER visits for varied things. Not much seemed too crazy to me back then.

Driving Drunk in my early 20s

Hanging off a railroad bridge in my teens.

Getting into fights, then getting shot at (hearing a bullet whiz by is frightening, to say the least).

Just another day in the life, yeah. I could think and come up with more for hours... the time my mom totaled the car, but airbags were new and we thought the car was on fire because of the "smoke" and smell. My ankle was broken, and I was 12, but I grabbed the 88 pound dog in my ARMS and ran from the car.

Pointing a loaded gun in jest at a friend back when I was too young and stupid to realize what I was doing.

Early rock climbing experience: me and a friend saw an interesting climb and started up it. It was HARD, but once wed got to the top we realized that there was no easy way down. The only way down was the way we came up and it was WAY harder going down. Lesson learned - ALWAYS scope out the down climb before you climb up.

I've been roped on 400' walls, but that doesn't seem as dangerous as a 30' un-roped climb.

While backpacking, came to an impassible creek. Finally saw a way to leap (with a heavy pack) as far as I possibly could, land on one foot on a rock and hop another few feet to the other shore. Fast moving snow melt at 11000'. I stared for a LONG time thinking about it (20min at least) and when I saw a group on the other side coming close, I decided to go for it - they could help if I fell in. I can still feel the stress on that knee when I landed on that first rock. Man, that was stupid...

Back in the day riding my 1974 H2 750cc Kawasaki (3 cylinder 2 stroke) on a highway north of Terre Haute, IN. It was a Saturday around midnight in the summer. No traffic. I loved speed so pushed it up to about 110 mph for about 3 miles. I turned around and headed back to town on another high speed run. The engine redlined and I suddenly lost all acceleration so I dropped it back to idle and coasted about a mile back to the city lights where I found a gas station still open. Coasted in and took the side cover off the engine and found the nut on the front sprocket had vibrated loose and was stuck in grease on the inside of the case with the sprocket. The chain was still on the shaft and was just loosely skipping around.

It had sheared the pin that held the nut on the front sprocket. If that chain had come off the 2 inch drive shaft it would have locked up and tossed me and the bike most likely over the Hwy 41 bridge and into the Wabash river.

Realizing just how lucky I was as I figured it out. Got a more secure star washer the next day. They didn’t call them “widow makers” for nothing. Still have that bike.

My insurance company would say Cavediving.

I never considered that to be dangerous because I was trained and methodically followed the rules. There are any number of things I considered more dangerous from playing Lawn Jarts to a drunken moment when I crawled out the window of a car, crossed the roof, and crawled in the other side - all while speeding down Interstate 75.

All involve skiing:

Too fast
Trees too tight
Icy slopes above exposure (ie cliffs)
Set off avalanche
Attempted tricks in terrain parks
Super steep terrain with less than perfect conditions
Ventured into deep powder without a buddy
Drove to the ski area in my 63 Bug with bad tires and no defroster

Driving deep into Joshua Tree Park in a ‘78 Buick Skyhawk, getting off-road before sister suggested we turn around. It was nearing sundown, and now I know there would have been nothing but meth labs... and probably worse... that far out.

As a kid, climbed a 40-50 foot apricot tree. Ended up hanging by one hand brown trouser scared. Made it down in one piece.

Twice been face to face with jumpy police as a fairly large 6’3” Black man. Once when a liquor store clerk “accidentally” pushed his robbery button, the other when I stepped out of my apartment to see what the commotion was after hearing a scream from the floor above.

Luckily my grey haired, but grizzled neighbor lady, revolver in hand, stepped out of her apartment too just before the cops charged up the stairs. Together, we looked more like Samuel L. Jackson and Helen Mirren in some lost Agathie Christie mystery than perpetrators.

Riding my motorcycle home after getting intoxicated at happy hour one summer Sunday evening when I was 20 years old. Wasn’t wearing any safety gear at all. Ran a red light on the way home that I didn’t even see and came THIS CLOSE to getting creamed by cross traffic.

I was sober when I arrived home safe a few minutes later. That was the last time I rode/drove any vehicle intoxicated and without proper safety gear.

Skydiving comes in at a distant second.

It is what it is.

Riding my bike every day for 30 years. 4 major accidents, none of which were my fault. Fractured pelvis, broken collar bone and hand, dislocated shoulder and 8 weeks in physical therapy to get my body back into alignment after some a-hole in a pick-up truck turned in front of me when I was going 25 mph. Asphalt is very unforgiving!

Still Riding though not the mega miles I used to do.

I haven't done any cave diving, but I have done wreck penetration. As Ombligo says, if you meticulously follow the rules, it's not as dangerous as it sounds. Although I do know someone who does cave diving, and on one trip he found the body of someone who obviously didn't follow the rules.

Don’t know if it’s the most dangerous, but certainly not the smartest.

Driving too fast down a (thankfully) paved 2-lane county road with bar ditches on each side and suddenly recalling that the right-hand turn right in front of me was a 90 degree, 20 mph turn and not a curve. I hit the brakes and found they didn’t grab. The car slewed around, and at that moment I realized that trying to control the spin would end badly. I whipped the wheel to finish the 180, and I found myself going backwards. Had I hit the bar ditch at my now rear at least my head would have been cushioned by the headrest. I don’t think I was wearing my seatbelt. Fortunately the car stopped before hitting said bar ditch. No damages done and so I never had to admit to it.

During my (high school) senior trip we went to one of the reservoirs around here. A friend and I decided to swim across an arm of the reservoir to a stone fort on the other side, never mind the boats speeding through there. I did grab a life jacket I towed behind me in case I got tired. Made it across only to realize that I had the return trip to make. Nothing like floating around with your arm waving in the air hoping someone will see you before it’s too late.

The one and only time I drove while intoxicated. Never again, as it scared the crap out of me.

When I was younger I would drive anywhere at anytime, with never a thought about what could happen if the car broke down and refused to move. Yeah, the fearlessness of youth.

My high school best friend was driving me and our dates home from a club around 4:00AM, and it was a roughly one hour trip, so I dozed off. I awoke to find us in a full 360 spin on the highway with the sound of screeching and the smell of burning rubber. He had also fallen asleep, but he jerked the wheel when we started to veer onto the shoulder. A car that could have struck us sped by just as we came to a stop. We all talked about how scary it was and that we were lucky to be alive. I was asleep again within 10 minutes.

Apologies to the anonymous forum member affected by my previous sig pic. It was my personal pic of a country expressing great grief as their leader, one of the most recognized people in the world, lay on his deathbed 8 years ago, days before he died. Like a naif, I did not realize it was offensively political, I considered it an expression of deep emotion and a reminder of the mortal coil's nature; that we all, great and small, can only hope to make a difference in our short time here, no matter the personal cost.

I'll post another pic from my work in South Africa that is, hopefully, apolitical.

Jumped out of cable car on the side of a mountain in Switzerland. I was attached to a bungee cable.

A couple days later, I went canyoning, also in Switzerland. This involved jumping off waterfalls into pools below, hiking up waterfalls, rapelling down, and sliding down watery shafts. Four years later, Adventure World, the company that ran these expeditions, got shut down/declared backrupcy after 21 people died on the same trip I did due to a flash flood on the river.

I'm normally reasonably cautious, but it seems that cars make people behave differently at times, especially in their 20s.

Driving an RWD vehicle with worn tires around a curve in the rain- too fast, wound up sliding across the lane of oncoming traffic, did NOT get hit, slid to a stop in the grass. Counted my fingers and got back on my way. Got new tires the very next day!

Driving same vehicle, on a 230 mile trip at night after being awake for the prior 30 hours, with 3 friends in the car. "Yeah I'm fine" I said. Then I fell asleep. Car ran up onto the median, swiped a light pole with the side mirror and wound up getting stuck straddling said median. No injuries, but car had to be towed to a repair shop.
