Tiger Woods injured in rollover car crash, extracted with 'Jaws of Life'

A car driven by golf legend Tiger Woods crashed in Southern California on Tuesday, causing serious injuries, officials said.

Woods' vehicle was going north on Hawthorne Boulevard at Blackhorse road, on the border of Rolling Hills Estates and Rancho Palos Verdes, when it crashed and sustained "major damage," the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said in a statement.

"Mr. Woods was extracted from the wreck with the 'jaws of life,' " the sheriff added.

He was rushed into surgery at a nearby hospital where he was treated for a compound fractures in at least one leg, law enforcement sources said.

That does not sound good for anyone, let alone a golf pro.

Tiger has had so many surgeries, and always comes back strong. But this sounds awful and I truly hope this is not a DUI situation.

True, but I suspect the compound leg fractures may pose a more immediate challenge, not to mention the likelihood of TBI from a crash like this.

from the look of it, he was going pretty fast. his car came from the other side of the road and went several hundred yards based on the video from the helicopter.

Tiger is in town for the Genesis Tournament but is not playing due to a recent back surgery, which he also thought might keep him out of the master's this year.

Crashed at 7 AM, so not likely alcohol.

Looking at pics, how did that happen? Just lost control at high speed? The car is way off the road, halfway down the hillside from the looks of ot.

Since he's recovering from back surgery, my first thought was that either a medication he may be taking for the back surgery recovery, or that in combination with some other substance may have contributed to this.

I tend to not go with it being 7 am, so likely no alcohol involved. I am not saying that it was, but if you are a drinker, you tend to drink. Doesn't matter the time of day. Or all night long.

Cant wait to hear how he is doing..

And I only want to hear good news...

My memory is that stretch of Hawthorne is a steep descent. Used to drive it fairly frequently in high school. I think it was posted at 45mph back in the seventies. I received my only speeding ticket doing 59. (Again, it's a pretty steep downgrade. To my new-driver sensibility, I was coasting.)

Someone on the news had a similar opinion, which would explain the extensive front end damage. They also said the car was uphill from the road.

This would be a truly terrible way for his career to end, after all he's done.

I've always marveled at the guy. You can tell he wanted the perfection in sports, not the intense scrutiny of his personal life.

I'm very familiar with that area - I used to live just a little farther up the hill.

Based on the media accounts I've read, I believe the accident occurred a litter further down the hill from the intersection of Hawthorne and Blackhorse -- the circled area in the photo below is where I think the accident most likely occurred. It's the only place along that stretch of Hawthorne where he would be able to go off the road without hitting a house and there is a drop-off from street level on that side of the street that would contribute to the severity of the accident.

Note that he was traveling south on Hawthorne (i.e., toward the top of the photo) - there is a fairly wide median he would have had to cross to go off the road on the other side. The median there has a fair number of trees on it - it's quote possible he hit one, contributing to his loss of control.

I would classify it as moderately steep. Farther down the road in the direction he was traveling, at the intersection of Hawthorne and PV North, there is one of those runs on the side of the road that trucks can use to stop when their brakes go out.

Fire Chief quoted as saying they used "hand tools and a fire axe" to get
Tiger out of the wreck. No mention of 'Jaws of Life'.
Appears the pillars held the roof and didn't collapse.
I wish Tiger a speedy and full recovery!

Based on the shape of the median opening that appear in that video, it looks like the accident occurred a bit farther south on Hawthorne than I first thought, just past where it runs off the top of the photo I posted.

It’s almost spooky how the mind works.

I am the last person you would call ‘a car guy’, but that part of your post immediately made my antennae vibrate. I googled ‘Hyundai Genesis unintended acceleration’.

Six incidents, as late as 2019 (that owner being a professional mechanic).

Perhaps even more relevant under some of the apparent circumstances, some 2021 Hyundai Genesis are are already under recall order. There is a defect with the fuel pump jet nozzles that can, “... cause an engine to stall, there could be an increased risk of a crash, especially if the car was driving at a high speed.”

There is at least one report that Tiger Woods was seen leaving his hotel driving faster than normal.

Police spokespersons made a few interesting comments. Two of them refer to Woods being alert and lucid at the scene, and one mentioned that Woods showed no signs of impairment, and that that area is the scene of an atypically high number of accidents.

It has also been reported that at the time, Woods was approximately half an hour late for an appearance; the location being roughly an hour away, the appearance scheduled for 7:30am and Woods leaving the hotel at about 7:00am.

What photo “below”? I’m seeing an aerial photo above your post, and there’s no “circled area” in it.

What photo “below”? I’m seeing an aerial photo above your post, and there’s no “circled area” in it.

I posted a photo at the end of my previous post. It's visible on my PC and my iPad but not on my Mac using either Safari or Firefox. So... its failure to display may be a Mac issue.

I have heard a few things on media.

1. He was waiting for a result of an MRI, or something to see how his treatment was going, and whether it looked good for that big tournament coming up.

2. And that before he took out of that Hotel, or where ever he was leaving from that morning, he took a while in his vehicle, possibly to get information on his phone., and then he took off in a hurry., So maybe bad news.

I hope he wasn't impaired, and that he survives ok.

At this point, if I were to speculate, I'd say much of his golf career is probably over, but he could surprise me.

Not that it's significant, but I haven't seen or heard any reports of unintended accelerations.

And the FI problem of stalling, and potentially dangerous at high speed doesn't seem applicable in this case.

No, not a great marketing opportunity for Hyundai, if Woods were found to be impaired, or the Genesis at fault somehow.

But if neither of the above, "the car that saved Tiger Woods" could be a selling point. if of questionable taste.

”Tiger Woods is recovering in a Los Angeles hospital after undergoing a lengthy surgery for severe leg and ankle injuries he suffered Tuesday morning in a single-car accident.

The chief medical officer and interim chief executive at Harbor-UCLA Medical Center detailed the extent of the injuries, saying that a rod, pins and screws were needed to stabilize Woods’s injuries.

“Comminuted open fractures [aka “compound fractures”] affecting both the upper and lower portions of the tibia and fibula bones were stabilized by inserting a rod into the tibia,” Anish Mahajan said in a statement released early Wednesday by Woods’s representatives. “Additional injuries to the bones of the foot and ankle were stabilized with a combination of screws and pins. Trauma to the muscle and soft-tissue of the leg required surgical release of the covering of the muscles to relieve pressure due to swelling.”

After another set back this big, I’ll be very surprised if Woods is able to return to playing the elite level of golf he’s been known for. But he possesses phenomenal determination and discipline, so I wouldn’t bet against him.

Multiple open leg fractures sounds horrific amd can leave a person unable to walk again, but if anyone can come back from that, it's Tiger.
