But his extended family aren't distancing and masking enough for me to be over there like I'd like to be. But I have to represent and let them know he was special to me.

A. florist sells you flowers .. A floral designer buys from a lot of florists. Then arranges them for you at a 150% markup .

Oh. So floral designers are also florists unless they use a broker?

I suppose it’s a question inclusivity. An ophthalmologist often does what an optometrist does (write prescriptions) but the converse can’t be true.

There is an actual difference and it is along the lines of what srf1957 in his post. This is what I learned when my wife and I put together our wedding in 2010:

Floral Designer

A floral designer is an artist that takes flowers and other components to create custom unique designs for a given project, i.e. weddings, birthdays, engagements, corporate parties, etc. They don't necessarily have a store front with flowers on hand and/or predesigned arrangements for immediate purchase. They do have ample designs to present that a customer can request them use in their original form. They can customize it or design something entirely from scratch. They're job isn't to sell flowers per se. They sell designs that happen to contain them.


Florist

A florist sells flowers. They've got a stock of cut flowers and "ready to go" arrangements and a catalog of arrangements they put together regularly. That's all some florists do. Some florist do that and also throw together basic arrangement for pickup or delivery. Some florist are also floral designers or have a department that has a floral designer for customized unique arrangements that are above and beyond what a typical florist will do in his/her store.

And, yes, a floral designer can definitely get offended if you think of him/her as a florist. To a floral designer, being called a florist diminishes their professions and is like calling a trained locksmith a key cutter.

Through many means we live in a society that tends to diminish and play rough with our simple sense of dignity and agency. More times than not I find no reason to bridle or snark at someone’s attempt at gathering a bit of that back on their side of the table.

The problem is, the list is so long it's unreasonable to expect people will know. Being upset with someone because they don't know is petty, arrogant and a few other undesirable traits. The experts are the ones with the expertise, and part of that expertise should be not holding average people to the same standard as experts.

Data analysts, data scientists, data engineers and similar all deal with this. This is true across many professions. Product designers and production designers are completely different, but I'd only expect people in the field to understand.

If you don't want your profession to be confused with another one, pick a profession that is widely known with commonly defined titles.

Hi everyone,

It's less so much the difference in professions and more how to work with someone who doesn't know the difference between them. An expert will know how to handle the situation in a professional manner. If that person is in a profession that is easily confused with another profession, then he/she needs to be less sensitive about this kind of issue.

Case in point, if I had to deal with with a floral designer who became offended and took it personally if I mistakenly thought he/she was a florist, I'd immediately walk out the door and take my business elsewhere. There are enough florist and floral designers that I don't need to give my business to someone who is so easily offended and unprofessional about a reasonable and unintentional mistake.

It'd be a different matter entirely if the person understood that he/she is in a profession that is easily mistaken for another and handled it in a professional manner. That means, handle it with courtesy and grace and educate the person who made the mistake.

The floral designer I know works with CAD software, welds frames, sculpts foam.

I don't know that she actually has contact with flowers as part of her vocation. I think she has people do that for her.
