Do you, or have you ever, run malware software on your Mac? (asked in the tone of Senator McCarthy circa 1955)

I'm in the never category here, but I know others are in an office/shared environments, or are more cautious in this regard. Curious how the numbers look in 2021

I answered YES, although not "recently". We have ClamXAV installed on our machines. Waitin4CJ likes those kinds of things.

I've never felt the need for it. But after re-reading the question, I have run malwarebytes on my computer a few times. Every time it was after having to run it on either my son's, wife's, mother-in-law's, or other family member's computer. I decided to run it just to see if anything came up. Nothing ever did on mine.

I installed something that was recommended somewhere. It lasted a day or two before I removed it. It made my computer pretty much unusable. Top of the line MacBook Pro dragged to its knees by whatever it was doing in the background. All. The. Time.

I have "Bitdefender" and run it occasionally. It's like a scanner, not one that runs all the time. It updates its database before it runs and then does a scan. It has never found anything.

Depends.

At the least, I recommend having antimalware software like Malwarebytes handy.

If you have kids or run a business or your Internet habits aren't very good and you have a history of finding malware on your system then go for antivirus software that does live-file scanning.

Nyet.

But its not really a simple yes/no question. Work in an office with lots of PCs, yea. Personal mac that never done, nah.

Not since OS 9. Years ago, on a couple OS X machines, I ran ClamxAV a few times. I've never used an OS X AV product that ran constantly. I have MalwareBytes handy in case of emergency.

I got BitDefender when I purchased my Netgear mesh WiFi system. I paid for a year's subscription with a discount coupon and put it on my wife's PC but haven't installed it yet on my Macs or mobile devices. I was afraid that it would slow down my devices. The AV service at the router seems useful but it has blocked some valid sites as spam. No problem to make them exceptions.

I have Avast, but only use it for flash drives I bring home from work (a school).

Have free Malwarebytes on my Macs, but only run scans if I suspect something.

My ISP offers McAfee Security for free but I haven’t downloaded it. Has anyone used it?

I occasionally use MalwareBytes, only found something a couple times.

In the past I have used Sophos Home as it was free for home use. Then a few years ago they made a major update and made it an online, cloud based app. In the process they introduced a bad memory leak, so I removed the app. Don't know if they ever fixed the memory leak, they did make it hard to make a report. Sophos did occasionally have a hit on a file in an email attachment or a download, almost all of them were PC viruses.

That is to say I'm not agin it, I just haven't used anything more than the free version of Malwaerebytes, and then, not with any regularity.
