Jasmine Rice vs. Long Grain White Rice - Which Is Better?
Posted by: Rick-o

My sister cooked us up a delicious stir fry last time she visited. She goes on and on about how good jasmine rice is over regular rice. She says it has a nice "nutty" flavor. I can't tell the difference. I like all kinds of rice dishes, but isn't rice supposed to absorb the flavor of whatever you cook it with?

I want your opinion!! confused smiley

Mr. Lahey: A lot of people, don’t know how to drink. They drink against the grain of the liquor. And when you drink against the grain of the liquor? You lose.

Randy: What the @#$%& are you talking about?

I like Jasmine rice. I think it has a more delicate flavor, if that makes sense.

"Better" is a subjective concept.

It is what it is.

Jasmine rice has a slightly nutty flavor but is somewhat stickier than long grain white rice. More expensive. lf you didn’t taste a difference, though...

Don’t forget brown rice though, more nutritious. Jasmine rice also comes in brown.

I discovered Geechie Boy Mill Carolina Gold Rice (long grain).
Pricey but really nice. $13/1.5lb @ bezosville

You can also buy direct from Geechie Boy but it's not economical unless
you place a big order due to shipping costs.

Also like brown basmati rice from India.

Good quality fresh Jasmine is one of my favorites. I also like CalRose short grain mixed in for flavor

Cook the rice in stock or broth instead of water.

Also check out Basmati rice.

Consider toasting the rice:

“ Cook the rice in stock or broth instead of water.”

This too.

Jasmine rice doesn't "act right." I'd rather have long grain,

To serve with gumbo, red beans or to make jambalaya, I like long grain white - Uncle Ben's Parboiled.

Concur also.

For something different, try this:

Popcorn rice

I used to use Stansels rice. Pretty good

As being part Cajun, I can cook rice in any old pot . But a Zojirushi , I picked up is my favorite appliance. The microchip adjusts cooking. You can walk away and forget...the keep warm feature is great.

I use butter, 4-6 shots of Tabasco, sea salt. I use Jasmine, Basmati, Cal Rose, Nishika.

I like a quick rice setting, Open a few minutes in after warms up to stir butter. Continue to cook, let sit 5-10 minutes

Bob’s Red Mill Grits /Polenta is very good in the rice cooker, as is his Steel cut Oats.. Red Beans on bed of Polenta is nice change

Long grain is my go-to, but enjoy so much all of the others... I love rice!
Each carry its own idiosyncrasies regarding amount of liquid and time.
And risotto, paella, Thai, fried rice, etc. They are not the same w/o their characteristic grain.

Risotto is too much work.

Basmati is my preference, but rice is kind of wasted carbs unless it's brown, or with someof the bran remaining. A good compromise is this "light brown" rice sold at Costco. It's also organic.

....I can show you the world
Shining, shimmering, splendid
Tell me, princess, now when did
You last let your heart decide?

I can open your eyes
Take you wonder by wonder
Over, sideways and under
On a magic carpet ride.....

Long grain and wild rice is the way to go. Especially if you can beef up the wild rice quantity.

My rice is so good, you can eat it plain. But I love to use Saffron sometimes, or cilantro lime. Discovered I could throw some frozen pot stickers on top of the almost cooked rice and they would steam in the Rice cooker

Next time you are making up your favorite rice ( I do like Jasmine), try cooking it in coconut milk. Turns out lovely.
