I'm driving a 32" 4K Samsung monitor with my M1 Mini. Works swimmingly!

Good point about web cam.

My computer gear is all long in the tooth.

By the time I buy the extras, the IMac might be the way to go

Get an M1 mac. Either the mini now or the iMac later.

At this point, spending any money on any intel mac is throwing away good money. Unless we are talking $10K MacPro money. why spend more for a slower mac?

A mini can run *two* 4K screens easily.

what extras? A good web cam is $30.... keyboard and mouse?

This.

If you have a decent monitor ready to use, that’s fine. Get webcam, external speakers, keyboard and mouse - you will not regret when the all-in-one M-series iMac gets released.

But if you are buying a nice monitor, too - and can wait - I would wait for the iMac or Apple to release their rumored replacement for the now ancient Thunderbolt monitor.

2021 is an exciting time as a Mac user - plenty of good iron to be released.

I have an Intel iMac that works fine - but it’s going to look ancient in a year when all of these M1X or M2 models are shipping.

Will those M1 iMacs be upgradable? I really think I want an IMac, but who knows when those will be out. I haven’t fooled with computers much, and been on iPad all the time. My laptops are 10 plus years old.

I got a 27 LG uk Screen at Goodwill for $29 during covid. I picked up some old Harmon Kardon Soundsticks at an estate sale. Need to check it all out carefully, I have a wired apple keyboard.

They're talking like summer or fall for new iMacs.

And no Mac has been meaningfully upgradable for quite some time. Ask yourself how many Macs you've upgraded in the last 15 years or so before thinking you'll miss that.

On the current M1 models it costs about $200 each to double RAM or storage at purchase, from 8 to 16GB RAM and from 256 to 512GB storage. 1TB storage is also available.

I bought an Air today. Paid the extra to get 512GB storage, as compared to around $130-ish it might cost to get similar speed externally (256 external + the 256 in the base model). That would cost less (possibly far less) if the external would be slower, but then it wouldn't be a fair comparison. I decided it was worth the extra $70 or so to have that built in because I know I'll use it and didn't want that cord or whatever always hanging off it. When the day comes I outgrow the 512 internal something else will have changed, my circumstances or ability to get a replacement Mac.

As deckeda mentioned... define "upgradable".

If you haven't upgraded a 10 year old mac... what are the odds you would upgrade one now?

Im struggling with the notion of neededing an iMac vs a mini.

If *I* HAD to buy a computer today then I might want a 27" iMac with 64GB ram, real GPU and 5K screen + 2 additional screens, 3 total. But I'm doing above and beyond normal graphics work.

For anything else... mini.

Who is "they"?

"lowest" mini is only determined by its ram and drive. All M1 macs (except the lowest MBA) have the exact processor.

iPP with an apple magic keyboard is almost a MBA...
