12TB External USB drive $180

Matches some deals I saw last fall. Good deal on big capacity drive. You should be able to shuck the drive and use the internal elsewhere if desired. I have done this on 8, 10, 12 and 14tb drives on my Synology with no modifications required. Some report that a small modification needs to happen if you use the drive internally with certain systems, but I've not needed to do that. YMMV, please research before buying.

Re: The "small mod..."

If you're shucking it and using it in hardware >2yrs old you may need to tape over one of the pins on the drive to have it recognized.

I had to do this to get these drives working in a Drobo.

Very tempting. I had to recently archive stuff off my drobo. Apparently 36TB Isn't enough. If my math is correct the 18TB drives would work out to 64TB of storage. That would be a nice boost.

I have a similar model 12TB Easystore. Carbon Copy Cloner keeps giving me warnings about there being issues on the drive, although TechTool Pro scanned it and said it was ok. I'm slowly sorting through the stuff I have on it, and am going to move everything back to one of my internal drives soon.

Out of curiosity, which Drobo? I put 5 shucked drives in my 5c and they all worked fine. Maybe it was just new enough. I bought it in '19.

5D (Thunderbolt/USB). Latest firmware.

I tested the drives first. They were not recognized by the Drobo without the tape. Just didn't show up in the Dashboard and the front lights didn't change.

They did mount on my Mac via generic Amazon/Chinese drive-dock.

FWIW, all these drives have worked in my Synology DS418play that I bought in May of 2018. Looks like it was released in fall of 2017.

Cant fathom ever needing that much space, or having enough things on that much space that I would need to access again in the future.

Same here, with a Drobo 5C.

Five W-D drives, shucked and installed, no mod, no issue.

It's good to know though.

I've ordered another 5C and that mod could be necessary in a newer version.

The drives from a Gen 3 4-Bay will go into it, and then they'll be upgraded.

I just got two 12T externals form B&H for $395 OTD.

This deal is slightly cheaper with CA sales tax.

I've got a drive pack I'd like to move from a Gen 2 Drobo to a 5C, but I believe I have migrate the data itself from one Drobo to the other instead of moving the drive packs.

Ugh.
