Can this Forum's software be tweaked to cap characters in Subject line?

Just curious if this is possible. the recent spate of extensive subject lines reading the message list on mobile quite tedious.

A cursory scan of subject line lengths most of us tend to use indicates a 120 character cap would still be quite generous. Some of us would have to edit a bit but we're all smart enough to work with that.

I don't know coding so I have no idea how feasible it would be to implement. figured it wouldn't hurt to ask.

Agreed, on both counts.

While I've never inquired, I've previously lamented the practice of putting a post in the Subject line instead of the body provided, a practice that predates the current spate.

(Great word, gl!)

I never bothered to count the characters in a typical post, but a cap would be welcome.

You might want to send an email to forum-moderator@macresource.com. Moderators here don't tend to moderate much, and won't necessarily see this thread.

Maybe we can decide for ourselves and share that recommendation?

I try to keep my subject lines short, but I'm sure some are too long.

How long is too long?

done. along with full explanation and documentation of the problem though the verbose subject lines have been subsequently shortened. imagine that.

No modifications are going to happen to the Phorum software, sorry. It is what it is.

How long is too long?

Oh, like this:

I just wanted to take this time, mid-afternoon, to let ya'll know that 'Doris Day' is the star of the month on TCM [ they will be playing her movies all month long ] and hope that it brightens your Day, in some way.......

or this:

guys, it is with heavy heart that I must make the announcement to y'all that 'Joan Weldon' has passed away 'peacefully' [ she was an actress ] and although the name may not be well known, you may know her best from one part from one movie in particula

These have since been shortened. The kerfuffle was perhaps precipitated by this thread which has also had its subject line edited from the original though length was not the issue there.

....but as long as you aren't inconvenienced....god forbid....that's all that really matters in the world....yes, I updated/shortened.....by the way, there already is a limit characters in the subject header, if you try to to a test/preview, you will see that you can go past a certain point.......

.....guess we now know who is 'passive aggressive'........

What is the official cap? trying to come here on an iPhone was clearly not a thought when that cap was determined.

Given past and present practice, it's not limited enough.

The recent excess character headline was just a little forum drama. It has now passed. Take a chill pill, as the youngin's say, and don't wake the sleeping moderators.

My take also.

I'm ok with the discussion, even if the specific issue has passed.

I spend time on twitter - 140 characters for the entire post works. I am not a big fan of 280, but whatever.

Also no reason to bother the moderators, we can sort this out ourselves.

Another idea is, every time someone posts a subject line longer than you like, get into a big snit about it and complain.

Not even close.

In fact, gl's request was eminently civil, but she got snits in responses.

Because, you know, we're all so grown up and all.

...And Saint Attila raised the hand grenade up on high, saying, "O LORD,
bless this Thy hand grenade, that with it Thou mayest blow Thine
enemies to tiny bits, in Thy mercy." And the LORD did grin, and the
people did feast upon the lambs and sloths and carp and anchovies and
orangutans and breakfast cereals, and fruit bats and ...
And the LORD spake, saying, "First shalt thou take out the Holy Pin.
Then shalt thou count to three, no more, no less. Three shall be the
number thou shalt count, and the number of the counting shall be
three. Four shalt thou not count, neither count thou two, excepting that
thou then proceed to three. Five is right out. Once the number three,
being the third number, be reached, then lobbest thou thy Holy Hand
Grenade of Antioch towards thy foe, who, being naughty in My sight, shall snuff it.
