I may not be the smartest kid on the block, but what kind of scam are these free laptop, free ipod guys running.

The radio ad said just sign up and the send you a laptop "guaranteed".

There is clearly some catch here.

Is it some long term contract for internet service or what? I don't get it? There is no "free lunch" do people actually fall for this kind of stuff?

Another: "if it sounds too good to be true it probably is" which applies to these things extensively

I don't know anyone who has ever bitten on one of these things.

I suspect it's a pyramid marketing scheme.

They collect your info and sell it to thousands of mailing lists. They earn money on your participation. But they don't earn enough money to pay for the gift. So they don't give you the gift yet.

If you can encourage say 1000 other people (or 100 or whatever) to give their info on your referral, then you get the prize (maybe).
