It just happened again... I was sitting inside at the moment, but a shadow passed over the window 3' from me. Ok, maybe that doesn't count...

But there have been times that it's happened 5-6 days in a row outside in the summertime.

I live not far from an exAFB - now a small airport. It seems that a lot of the firefighting flights launch from here.

I see planes overhead WAY too low WAY too often. I fear that one day we are going to have another Farrell's incident. (plane crash from a small airport into a ice cream parlor killed 22, 12 kids)

I see those CDF planes often enough, but much higher.

We get a lot of "Mig 28s" flying over... =)

used to be able to watch the 747s glide in for a landing to JFK from the Belt parkway. They took up the entire sky.

I remember feeling awestruck as a young child when a large shadow raced over me on a sunny day.

We're not in the flight path of the big airport here, so the big planes flying over are usually at cruising altitude. There is a small "executive" airport nearby, but I don't think we ever get any flyovers. Except helicopters. We're less than a mile from a large regional hospital, and whenever there's an accident that needs an airlift, they fly pretty low over our house.

I worked on the roof of a building one summer in my youth for a couple of weeks as an HVAC tech. It was near Dover AFB. I was in the shadows of many a C5-A Galaxies as they were doing touch and go landings just about every day. Don't even try to talk to anyone around you as they were flying several hundred feet above you.

Pretty much a function of proximity to an airport/airstrip, and how busy it is: far away and it’s a rare incident, close by and busy, and it happens all the time.

When I was a kid Dad worked at Lockheed Marietta. I remember the C5s screaming overhead either in takeoff or landing; I held my hands over my ears they were SO loud. A couple of years later the Marietta facility closed down, and we were off to a new place. A sheet metal mechanic goes where the work takes him. A plane passing overhead was no big deal.

I grew up right under the western approach to Birmingham Airport, so not that uncommon for me as a kid.

A plane passing overhead was no big deal.


Three times in my life I've lived closed to airports so being in an airplane eclipse is no big deal.

And will not living anywhere near an airport I happened to be traveling by one on three different occasions where a private aircraft crashed on a surface street.

Mild injuries to the pilots of two crashes, and none to the third.

No harm to any citizens, which was really surprising.

One, a plane, out of fuel, came in to low and caught a three wire.]]

That is, three wires on a telephone pole and landed on its back.

Another had an engine failure, cleared the wires but still stuffed the landing on the street.

The third made the classing mistake of making a sharp banking turn during take off without the air speed to support it.

Surprisingly, at least to me, none of the planes sustained nearly the visible damage one sees in a typical car crash at speed.
