What name do you go by?

I seem to be encountering a bunch of people lately who go by three middle name. Is this very common and I am just noticing it now?

Abbreviated first name for non-professional work.

I know many who use their middle name, even for professional branding.

My legal name is Roland. I started going by Rolando because white chicks in Austin loved saying it in Spanish! Pretty much stuck since then.

My grandfather went by his middle name.

My sister hasn't used her given name in her entire life; when they brought her home from the hospital I thought she was a "kitty-cat," and she's been Kitty ever since.

My first name is Bruce. Years ago I was hired by a company on one condition that I changed my name. The owners name was Bruce. We had several Jims and Steves but only one Bruce. For 10 years I used my middle name Kevin. It was kind of nice because if I got a call at home asking for Kevin my wife would say "he is not available now. Can I take a message?"

I've always hated my given name and my middle name is much more appealing, but the idea of trying to get people to call me by a new name seems like more trouble that it was worth.

A friend of mine was given a new name by her guru and insisted that she wanted to be known as her new name. It was hard on her and she never converted her immediate family, but all is well among her old friends now 20 years later.

At the moment, I go by my middle name. There are exceptions, some places just about demand your first name as a ”legal” name.

The reason for using my middle name is that my first name is the same as my father. He was a deeply disturbed bastard who made my family’s life hell. So, yeah, not using that name.

Oddly enough though I have been considering appending my first initial, eg ‘T. John Doe’. It might just be a temporary flight of fancy, but it’s come to feel a little like excising my first name is in a way denying or even hiding from the full story of who I am. The initial restores that, but signifies it’s not who I’ve grown to be.

I did know a guy whose parents had his name changed legally to just “Co”, no last name. Seemed perfectly happy.

Then one day he came in and in the course of conversation told us his name was now legally “Sam Wilson”. Said it took him time to work up to doing it. Also said he no longer talked to his parents, and yes, the two things were directly related.

I go by my first name, but know several people who go by their middle name. My FIL is one. One of my BILs goes by a nickname. My wife actually goes by her full given name, after going all the way through college on an abbreviated form of her name. Only family are allowed to call her by that name now. She absolutely hates it when she introduces herself with her full name, and people automatically use the abbreviated form.

I go by my last name...

When at work and had occasion to answer the phone for internal calls or those just for me, I always answered with my last name.

Sometimes I wish it wasn't many syllables, just one because that sounded better.

One guy did have a monosyllabic last name and being former military used the 'Go for James' response.

He wanted me to do the same but it just sounds too affected with multiple syllables.

He hated having two first names as first and last, but laughed when we pointed out he actually had three first names.

Borrowed from a famous astronaut during first moon landing while visiting folks for a few weeks during summer break at UCLA.
At that time, middle name was same as astronaut's given first name before he had it legally changed.
A few years later, said astronaut was a regular customer at the camera shop I worked at in the mid 70's.
Said astronaut was even more of a regular at the saloon a couple of doors down the street from the camera shop.
Starsky & Hutch was also filmed on the same block, and the cast and crew also frequented the camera shop and local bar.

Same for wifey, since her first name is the same as her mother's. Plus, Wifey's middle name is more unique - Ethelind.

My dad had his first and middle names switched somewhere along the line. His meddle name became his first name, which he went by. He had a problem with Social Security when he turned 65. My uncle goes by his middle name. His first name is Ozzie. My two best friends go by their middle names. My mentor went by his middle name.
